CARMEN
A Fatal Attraction - “Bizet’s masterpiece brought to life”
Fairbanks Symphony Association’s 2004-2005 Star Studded season continues with the local premiere of Georges Bizet's complete opera Carmen. This production is sung in French and is presented in C.W. Davis Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Complex (UAF), April 1 at 7pm and April 3, 2005 at 4pm.
The sultry, complex and utterly irresistible title role will be performed by Anchorage Opera’s Marlene Bateman. The role of Don José will be performed by the dashing Daniel Ebers and Fairbanks’ own opera diva Jaunelle Celaire will be cast in the role of Micaela. The suave bullfighter Escamillo will be portrayed by the deep voiced Daniel Narducci. Longtime Fairbanksan and Director of the Alaska Chamber Chorale, Marvilla Davis, will sing the role of Frasquita and UAF Graduate Student Val Lari will sing the role of Mercedes. Also appearing are Steven Dixon as Morales, Aaron Sutton as Zuniga, Bruce Hanson as El Remendado and Walter Fourie as El Dancairo.
A vast array of vocal forces have been assembled to perform the choral sections. The UAF based choirs were prepared under the direction of Dr. John Hopkins and UAF graduate assistant Val Lari. FLOT’s Theresa Reed prepared the Children’s Chorus. The Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra and all combined forces will be conducted by Maestro Eduard Zilberkant.
Based on the novel by Prosper Mérimée, this dramatic story of the wild gypsy Carmen, whose "love them and leave them" attitude has tragic consequences, is one of the world's most popular operas, featuring music often included in modern movies and television productions.
