I seemed to remember a few people talking about this over on Television Without Pity awhile ago, and went back searching. Unfortunately they purge a lot of their posts to save bandwidth so I wasn't able to get much. This is what I found:

Apparantly a lot of adaptations of Ellroy's work take forever to get made. They get stalled in production due to the fact that Ellroy's characters are often unlikable and the stories very violent, which makes them hard to adapt to the screen. L.A. Confidential was in production for seven years, and other Ellroy adaptations like White Jazz have been in development even longer and still aren't ready. Also, according to another poster at TWoP who went to a film festival in Milan said that Myriad Pictures was preselling the international rights to it which means it's most likely not going to get pulled. I don't know what that means, but it sounded like she knew what she was talking about.

Ok, after typing all that info I got from TWoP, I was dissatisfied. So I found another site, at Yahoo Movies that had a little more to say about it.

According to that site, the movie is set to begin production in 03/03, pushed back from 08/02. It's release date is TBD 2004 in possible limited release. Ack! That's a long time away. The only person who has been cast is Duchovny, which seems odd if they're going to start production in two months. The author of this site also expresses apprehension since two of Ellroy's other adaptations have been in development for some time. This website suggests checking out the DuchovnyForum.com for more information.
