Basically, my hands and right arm ached so much at night that I would wake up every couple of hours. My right hand was the worst and since I had previously had xrays, the blood test for rheumatoid arthritis and had been on anti-inflamatory meds for a year he didn't think any sort of brace would help. Both hands were tingling, I have lost a lot of strength in both and there was a lot of numbness when trying to pick up small objects. I just wanted to get it over with before school started--life gets too hectic then.

The surgery took all of 8 minutes and I chose to just have a local rather than general anesthesia. Seemed silly to me to be groggy and sleepy for something that short. They gave me a huge shot of antibiotics and I had to sit for a little over an hour before going in. There are two ways to do the surgery--arthroscopic or with an incision in the palm of my hand about half an inch up from my wrist (I didn't have arthroscopic.) The incision is only a little more than an inch long. Basically they cut through what's called the transverse carpal ligament to relieve the pressure that builds up when the tendon sheath thickens. These are the tendons that move our hands and fingers. Nice to sleep longer at night! I am having the left hand done on Aug. 10 so life might be interesting for awhile!

I started therapy last Monday. Rehabbing a hamstring or quad is easier! I just have to behave myself. Didn't want to pick string beans anyway!

A bit of advice--don't let your hands get as bad as mine--not worth it!
