Waiting in Half-Shadow

I can’t believe I was such and idiot. If I had been smart I would not have been trapped down here waiting. If I had been smart I would never have taken that dare. It was a dare given to me by Kendal. All I had to do was walk into the old haunted Mohare Mansion. If I could stay there from midnight until dawn she would be my friend again.
Everything in and around the house was dead, even the paint hung limp on the walls. As my feet felt for footing on the long forgotten path to the door the house seemed to take on a new life as a predator crouching and waiting to pounce on me. As I walked through the decrepit old door and the floor boards sagged under my weight as the darkness swallowed me. Creeeeeek, and the door swung shut behind me. From that point on I could feel eyes bearing down on me at all times. The eerie silence and darkness sent my mind reeling. What was in the darkness? Whose eyes were watching me?
As I headed for the spot where I would spend the night I prayed the footsteps I heard where just an echo of my own. A sliver of light fought through a dusty window and there, just there was the parlor with the rim of hole barely visible. The adults said it was just a spot where the floor had caved in but we kids knew better. Mr. Mohare had murdered his family and buried them in the cellar. His crime went unpunished and the guilt of it had driven him mad. Just before he hung himself he chopped that hole in the floor right over were the bodies of his wife and daughter were laid. It was here by this hole that I had to wait.
To prove to anyone who might be able to see me from the gate that I wasn’t afraid I looked over the edge and down into the hole. It was then that it happened. The darkness and silent whispers of at least an eight foot fall were so complete that I had to take a step back. At first I felt dry cold hands on my own. When I tried to turn and see what it was, those cold heartless hands pushed me into the darkness. Down and down I fell until my neck painfully cracked and the rest of my body landed with a hard slap.
I woke up to a dull pain in my neck. When I stood up I saw a body stiff with death lying at my feet. I flung my self away from it before I could identify anything about it other than death. It is lighter in here than standing at the edge told, and in the half shadow I could just make out the outline of the body. For hours I sat there thinking of who it could be. It wasn’t any of the Mohares. For one thing it still had flesh on it and they had died over a hundred years earlier, also their bodies had been found and buried almost just as long ago. Finally curiosity overcame me and I had to look. After all it might just be one of Kendal’s tricks.
As I crept oh so slowly towards it I realized that the head was twisted around from a broken neck. It was a dead body, an actual dead body that I was seeing!! Though the dread grew in me I moved forward another step and saw them. Those empty lifeless eyes staring at me. The sight could have killed me. Actually, no it couldn’t have, it was too late for that. Those dead eyes were mine.
No one ever came for my body and all that remains now are my bones and the ghost I now have become. I wait here forever true to my dare for I have yet to see the light of day. All the time I have spent here has only been enough to catch a glimpse of the “ghost” who pushed me into my half shadow. The glimpse of an old crazed woman named Kendal right before she hung herself.
