Chapter One:

“Grrreat!” Quencie said as she punched in her card before heading for the gate. “I have to work during that dance the Prince is putting on!” She wore her guard uniform, a somewhat clean, grey, dreary outfit that was ready for the trash can. “I don’t believe it!”

“Don’t worry, Quencie...” Kittyana said happily, “...I’ll tell you what happens there...if anything does happen anyway.” Kittyana was Quencie’s best-friend, although Kittyana was a were-kitten. She was often called Kitty for short. She wore the same drab uniform as Quencie, though she didn’t mind much. She looked human only until she shifted during fights or training exercises. “Maybe you can talk with the General...you know...to see if he’ll give you some time off,” she suggested.

“Oh, yeah, he’d really let me do that.” Quencie strutted out of the gates, and turned to wave at the guards currently posted there. “Of course, there is the fact that I haven’t had a break for a long time...” Quencie thought about it, and decided that maybe she should try, at least. She pulled out her keys to the small, black camero she drove so much. “Want a ride?” she asked Kitty.

Kitty smiled and said, “Sure!” They got in and Quencie turned on the radio. “Ah! “No Scrub”! I love that song!” Kitty exclaimed. Kitty began singing to the music, while Quencie just bobbed her head to the beat. They came to a stop light in town and pulled up by a convertible with a group of half-drunk boys around the age of 19 and 21.
“HEY!!! WOO-HOO!!!” one boy yelled. “HEY!! WANNA GET JIGGY WIT IT, BABY?!?!” another yelled. Quencie was too tired to put up with them, and just before the light changed, she hollered over to them.

“GET A LIFE YOU SONS OF WOLVES!!!” She slammed her foot on the gas and left the boys dumb-founded. “God! The nerve of some people!”

“You go girl!” Kitty said and held her hand up for a high five. Quencie completed the effect. “Man, you are so brave! I’d be afraid of them following me home, but you don’t care do you?!” Kitty pulled at the seat belt. It always did bother her.

“At home...I’ve got PMS and a gun...I’ll see how brave they can be!” Quencie said with a laugh. Kitty snickered. “Have you seen Jonny lately?”

“Um...” Kitty hesitated in thought. “No, I haven’t. Sorry.” She lifted her shoulders emphasizing that she hadn’t seen Quencie’s little brother in a while.

“That’s okay, Kitty. He’s my brother, not your’s. I just wish I knew where he was...you know?” Quencie said with a glance at Kitty. “He hasn’t been home in a long time...nearly a week. I’m worried about him.”

“I think I know what your problem is!” Kitty said with a start. “You worry way too much! You need to chill for a while...you know...go to the beach, or the pool, or somewhere other than the workplace.”

“I wish I could...” Quencie said sadly. “First off...I have to get my schedule cleared. Then I have to get the old-work-til-you-die-bastard-we-call-our-boss to give me the time off. And then, I’ll think about what to do on the vacation.” she said as she pulled up to Kitty’s house.

“Here’s your stop.”

“Thanks.” Kitty said in a low voice. “Don’t feel so bad. You’ll get time off soon...I can feel it!” Kitty was trying to cheer Quencie up. Quencie gave her a fake smile, though it looked real to Kitty. “That’s better!” Kitty grinned and closed the door to the camero. Quencie waved as Kitty turned onto the walk toward the door of the house. She pulled away, and drove home to her comfortable apartment.

Quencie unlocked the door as the sun peeked over the horizon. “Oh great! The sun’s all ready up!” She kicked the door open and slammed it shut. Her small living room was quite clean, and the kitchen was recently cleaned too. “Jonny might actually be home for once,” she whispered to herself. She entered the first door on the right down the small hallway. “Jonny?” she whispered, hoping she wouldn’t wake him, and knocked softly on the door.

She heard a moan from a male, and then, another moan from...a female! She peeked in around the door, and saw Jonny laying on his back, with a girl not even 16 laying by his side. Quencie’s eyes went wide. “JONNY! WAKE UP YOU JACK-MONKEY!”

Jonny woke with a start. “SIS?!” he cried when he say her in the doorway. “What the fuck are you doing home so early?!?!” He jumped out of bed and looked from the girl in his bed to his sister. “Um...she’s just a friend! I swear...she’s just a friend who needed a place to stay!”
“Shut up, Jonny! Who is she?” Quencie asked starring at her brother. Jonny didn’t say a word. “Who is she?!” Quencie asked again. When she received no answer, she grabbed Jonny’s raggy South Park t-shirt and shoved him against the wall of the room. “Who the hell is she, Jonny?!” she asked once more. “That’s the last time I’m going to ask you!”

“Her name is Jenny! She said she was 17! Honest!!” Jonny tried to explain.

“17?!” Quencie gasped loosening her grip on Jonny’s shirt. “She can’t be even 15 much less 17! Where’d you
find her?” she added.

“On the corner of the Wolf’s Hour, why?” Jonny asked.
“The Wolf’s Hour?!?!” Quencie’s grip tightened on Jonny’s shirt. Her eyes where wild with rage. “You were near the Wolf’s Hour?! How many times must I tell you to stay away from that place!”

“I wasn’t in it! I was just driving by there with some friends and they stopped at the light and asked if she wanted a ride. They were trying to hook me up with her all night! So, I brought her here! We didn’t do anything! I swear!” Quencie looked into Jonny’s eyes. She could see the truth.

“You’re telling me the truth?” Quencie half-asked.
“Yeah, sis! Cross my heart...hope to die...open the curtains...watch me fry...shoot me with a silver bullet...if I become a were-wolf...!!!” Jonny said frantically. “Now, can you put me down?”

Quencie let go of her hold, and Jonny landed on his feet with a thump. Jenny woke at the sound of the landing, and squealed when she saw Quencie. “Don’t worry, Jenny. It’s alright. You’re safe...for now...” Quencie said glancing angrily at Jonny, and turning her attention to Jenny.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t know this was your apartment! I thought it was his!” she said quickly in a small voice, pointing at Jonny for emphasis. She lifted the covers to her chest and grabbed a pillow to hug. “I’m so sorry, Quen!”

“I said ‘It’s alright’!” Quencie repeated, walking to Jenny’s side of the bed. “What were you doing at the Wolf’s Hour?” she asked, smoothing the frightened girl’s hair out of the child’s face.

“I was trying to get a ride home, and Jonny and his friends pulled up and asked if I wanted a ride. I asked them if they were going near my house, and they said ‘yes’, but when they came to it, they passed it up, and kept going and going...I didn’t know what to do. Then Jonny said I could stay at his place for the night. He was really nice. One of his friends wanted to take me to his home, but Jonny stood up for me.” Jenny wiped away the tears that flowed down her cheeks with the bed sheet, and hugged voraciously at the pillow.

“I see, and since I have the only car over here, Jonny couldn’t take you home,” Quencie admitted. “You were smart to wait for me,” she said looking toward Jonny.

“Thanks!” Jonny said with a grin.

“You’re not that smart, Moron!” Quencie said to shoot him down. “You should have written a note for me, telling me about Jenny!” She rose from her sitting position on the bed and said, “Give me a minute and I’ll take you home, okay, Jenny?”

“Okay, Quen.” Jenny got up from the bed. While her back was turned, Quencie slipped out of the room. She didn’t want Jenny to see the emblem on her uniform. The emblem was a sign belonging to the enemy of all those in the Wolf’s Hour. The Wolf’s Hour was owned and operated by a were-wolf and his pack. Were-wolves were the sole enemy of the were-cats, and visa versa.

“Okay, Jenny, I’m ready to go, are you?” Quencie asked as she trudged out of the hallway into the living room. She had thrown on her signature pine-green t-shirt she was known by so well. She also wore a pair of faded, Route 66, blue jeans, and had placed her black hair in a long pony-tail. “Come on.”

“M’kay. Bye, Jonny. It was nice meeting you,” Jenny said, as she stepped out of the door, following Quencie.

“Bye, Jenny.” Jonny waved farewell and closed the door behind her.

Quencie unlocked the doors to her camero and sat into the driver’s seat. “Jenny, please, stay way from the Wolf’s Hour. You’re 16 for crying out loud!” she told Jenny, when the girl sat in the passenger seat. “I don’t want you to get hurt. You know there are zombies around, and you never know when a were-wolf might want to snag a meal out of a young girl like you.” Quencie started the car and put it in reverse.

“I know. I apologize, Quen. I don’t know what I was thinking.” Jenny said over a fit of tears. “I shouldn’t have been there, and I’m sorry I was.”

“Just pray your mother is as understanding as I am. Hmm...” Quencie thought a while as she drove through the town. “I’ll just tell her you wanted to spend the night at a friend’s place since you were out so late, okay? That will take some of the punishment out of what you’ll get.”

“I’m good with that!” Jenny exclaimed happily.

“I thought you’d like that idea.” Quencie pulled up into Jenny’s driveway, and turned off the car. “Here ya go. Do you want me to go with you, to help soften the blow, maybe?” Quencie looked into Jenny’s face and read a pleased expression.

“Please?” Jenny asked, begging to Quencie. “Please, Quen?”
“Okay, Jenny.” Quencie laughed as she opened the door.
They exited the car and plodded toward the door. Jenny was the first one there. She tried to open it, but the door was locked. She knocked, but there was no answer. She knocked harder and harder, and soon enough, the door opened. “JENNY!!!” her mother cried. “Mich! Jenny’s home!!” A stocky man strode up to the door, and flung Jenny into a tight hug.

“Jenny! Where in God’s name were you?! We were so worried!” he said holding her.

“I stayed at a friend’s house. It was so late in the night, I didn’t want to walk home. I didn’t have a ride, and no money to call, and we don’t take collect calls!” Jenny started to tear up again.

“She was very smart, Mrs. Origh. The town is very dangerous when night falls. She called me this morning, asking to have a ride home, since her friend left for work.” Quencie said to help the story along.

“Yep. That’s exactly what I did.” Jenny acknowledged.

“Thank you, Quen!” Mich said, and shook her hand.

“You deserve some breakfast, Quen!” Jenny’s mother said.

“Thank you, but I must decline, Mrs. Origh. I really just want to get home, and go to bed. I haven’t had any sleep since noon, yesterday. I’ll see you around. Bye, Jenny, and remember what I said.” Quencie added as she waved, and turned toward her car.

“Bye, Quen!” Jenny said just before her mother closed the door.

Quencie went back to her apartment, and barely crawled to her bedroom. “Good night, Jonny!” she yelled as she passed his room.

“Good night!” Jonny yelled back to her. He was in the kitchen, eating a bowl of cereal.

Quencie was too tired to eat. She had to recharge. She stripped herself of her clothing and threw it on the table next to her bed. She threw back the covers and sat on the edge. She remembered to set her clock for noon. It was only 6 hours away, but it was a short time for someone who slept so quickly. She laid down on the soft, silky sheets, and fell fast asleep. She dreamed of nothing. She thought of nothing. She just slept silently.
