The eternal problem that every single author, writer, novelist, essayist, columnist, and all writing professions has to face.

Originality.

Nothing is original anymore, everything is copied and re-copied. However, its the twists and turns in the writing that makes it original. Not to mention the characters and setting.

What would Lord of the Rings be if the ring was found by an Orc, and he was sent on a quest to destroy the ring in the Valley of the Happy Faeries? And Sauron was a Ent gone insane? Well, the story would be a lot different. Entirely different actually.

Your idea for a story is good, I haven't actually read anything like it. Minus the main similarities in all fantasy ( dark lord ). Taking influence from mythical sources is a good idea. Tolkien took it from them, as did Robert Jordan, and probably most other sucessful writers.

The one problem, and one that has plagued me until recently, is trying to make stories too original. Trying to make a grand epic from scratch before you actually have something published is quite insane. Trust me on that. It's easy to lose focus on the story, and eventually give it up. Maybe that's just me.
