PROLOGUE

Once upon a time there was a Princess. Now, you are probably expecting me to say that she was a beautiful Princess, with blue eyes and golden hair, who lived in a Palace and was much loved by her father the King, her mother the Queen, and all the subjects of the kingdom.

But it was not like that at all. The Princess was a little on the short side, with unruly dark hair that was neither straight nor curly, a mouth rather too wide and a nose of no particular distinction. She had lovely big brown eyes, but as she disliked looking at herself in mirrors, she was unaware of this. In fact, she never thought much about the way she looked at all.

She lived not in a Palace, but in a small grey stone castle, with thick walls and narrow windows, and a small courtyard. The King spoke to her rarely, and the Queen had died when the Princess was very young. For the most part, the subjects of the kingdom did not love her, neither did they hate her. The King did not do much to interfere in their lives, the taxes they paid were low, and the Kingdom had not been at war in many years. The subjects spent as little thought on the King and the King's daughter as she did on the shape of her nose.

The Princess wasn't lonely though, as she had friends in the Palace and a pony of her own. She wasn't bored, because she was allowed to go out and roam around as she pleased, with no one paying much attention. She lived a carefree existence, or at least one not more trouble or confined than that of other children, right up until the day of her fifteenth birthday. On that day, things changed. And that's where our story begins.
