You fight him for three rounds, good luck (it took me a while). To get into the Air Realm, you can either go through the spaceship which appears (after you defeat the Fire, Water, and Earth guardians) or if you've already activated the four smaller crystals, you can get there through the great tree in the Earth Realm by playing the right song on the giant crystal in front of the doorway to the great tree.

Forgot to mention spaceship appears in the water realm where the whirlpool used to be.
