When eating with family or friends here are some tips on how to avoid eating or eating very little.

If someone knows about your ED then eat a little in front of them. Veggies are always a safe food.

Mingle. Be the person who gets to know everyone’s name. Talk to everyone. Also all the walking around could help burn off a few calories.

Keep a glass or bottle of water in one hand. Use your free hand for talking or something else. This will make it harder for someone to place food in your hands. You could also have a piece of fruit or veggies in the other hand.

Munch on an apple or veggies while mingling. People will see you eating and you’ll have witnesses.

Help the hostess. Place food out (that you won’t eat), arrange the tables and chairs. Be the “little helper” of the party. When the party is about over, help clean up. Too busy to eat and burn a few extra calories to boot.

Play with the kids. They’re usually active and not eating all the time. Plus if you’re tending them no one’s asking about your not eating.

Sit at the kids table. Use the kids size plate to have less food (you don’t want them to feel bad about you having a different size plate do you?). Most kids play with their food and you can do the same.

Arrive late and leave early. No time to eat but just mingle.

Complain of a stomach ache the night before (you’re probably nervous about going with so much food around, so your stomach is probably going around in circles anyway) and then the next day say it isn’t any better. When you get to the party you’ll have a very good and truthful excuse.

Offer to park cars, get coats, get cars from down the street, pick people up, drop people off, etc.

If you must have a plate and sit down, have lots of salad and veggies and fruit. Talk more then eat. If someone’s watching you, eat when they look your way. Play with your food, etc. Use any of the tricks you need to for this part.

If you have to bring something bring a fruit or veggie tray. You may want to even if you don’t need to bring anything. Then you’re guaranteed of having something very low in calories to eat. You could also bring sugar free jell-o and maybe fat free whipping cream for dessert. This is good if you know you’re going to be there for a long time and someone will suggest that you eat dessert. It’s yours so you have to eat it.

AS A LAST RESORT:
Be anti social. Go into the house, if they’re outside, or into another room and read a book or watch TV. Sit in the corner.

Fight with someone. You’re too upset to eat. You might even have to leave before dessert or even the meal.

Complain of cramps and nothing works. (Of course, EVERYONE will hear about it, so…it’s up to you).

Say you’re tired and go out to the car for a nap.

Get so drunk you can’t eat and you pass out (only if you don’t eat when you’re getting drunk).

Say you’re on a new “diet” and none of the food there is on it. (This may only work if you’re overweight or they don’t realize you’re ana. You may want to think of an actual diet or make up a name and say you heard about it on the internet).

Carry tissue with you and say you must be allergic to something so you better not eat just in case.

Get your tounge or lip pierced and say you need to have it checked so you better no eat anything. This could also work if it’s all ready pierced. (Of course there may be those who will say “I told you so”).

Use any of the complaints that you’ve used or heard of before (toothache, headache, sick, flu, etc).
