AN URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT
Vietnam, April 4, 2005

Re: Call for prayer for the appeal trial of the Rev. Nguyen Hong Quang and Evangelists of the Vietnam Mennonite Church on April 12, 2005

To:
Mennonite World Conference
North American Vietnam Mennonite Fellowship
EMM and MCC
Vietnam Evangelical Fellowship
Evangelical Church of Vietnam – North and South
All Pastors, Evangelists and members of the Vietnam Mennonite Church
Leaders and members of all Evangelical Protestant communities

Dear Christian leaders and all brothers and sisters in the Lord,

On behalf of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Mennonite Church, we sincerely thank you for the many ways in the past that you have supported us, and raised your voice on our behalf and prayed for our church which has suffered much heavy oppression. Also thank you for the ways you have been attentive to our needs, shared our burdens, comforted and encouraged and helped the families of the pastors and evangelists who have been in prison.

Dear Christian leaders, on the afternoon of March 31, 2005 we received the news from the offices of the lawyers defending Pastor Nguyen Hong Quang that “the People’s Court of HCM City will hear the appeal of the Rev. Nguyen Hong Quang an the Mennonite Evangelists on 12 April, 2005”.

Dear Christian leaders, we would like to affirm that the Rev. Nguyen Hong Quang is a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. The tradition and belief of our Mennonite Church is to love and favour peace, and hope for freedom and justice and to contribute to the building of a progressive society filled with love, and to communicate the love and salvation available in Jesus Christ to everyone. Pastor Nguyen Hong Quang and the Mennonite evangelists involved in this case did not “resist officers doing their duty”, as charged, and did not violate any laws of Vietnam in the incident of March 3, 2004. We confidently affirm that God will use his power to rescue his servants.

We of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Mennonite Church officially send this announcement of the appeal trial of the Rev. Nguyen Hong Quang and the other Mennonite evangelists to all Christian leaders. We take this opportunity to call all Christian leaders to two days of fasting and prayer (from 7:30 AM on 11 April 2005 to 5:00 Pm on April 12, 2005) for the serious problems of the church in Vietnam in general and for the Vietnam Mennonite Church in particular.

According to the spirit of Isaiah 58:6-7, “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chose: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yolk? To set the oppressed free and break every yolk? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked to clothe him and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? And also Hebrews 13:3, Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.

Please remember:

To pray for the Lord to grant strength to the Rev Nguyen Hong Quang and the Mennonite Evangelists still in prison. Pray especially for Ms. Le Thi Hong Lien, a Mennonite church worker who is being held as a prisoner in dangerous circumstances in the Bien Hoa Mental Hospital.
To pray for all children of the Lord that they will remain strong in the faith in spite of persecution and will have freedom of spirit to worship the Lord in any circumstances.
To pray for the judges’ panel sitting at the appeal trail on April 12, 2005, that they will judge justly and release the Rev. Nguyen Hong Quang and the other imprisoned Mennonite evangelists, and also return all property seized from the Vietnam Mennonite Church.
To pray that all the Lord will grant peace and protection to all Christian who come to attend the trial.
May the power and the anointing of the triune God be poured out on you all as you join us in prayer. We believe that as many Christian leaders and people unite in prayer and fasting, that miracles of the Lord will happen and His name will be glorified in these days.

May God richly bless you. Amen

On behalf of the Vietnam Mennonite Church,
Acting President

X signed

Evangelist Le Thi Phu Dung
(Mrs. Nguyen Hong Quang)
