Trust.
Prologue

The sun crept above the horizon at a slower rate than it had on the day before. From a window, it almost appeared as if the sun was hesitant; like it didn’t want to rise, but knew it had to. It was like the sun knew what this particular day held.

Just hours before on the brink of two AM, a light in hail but heavy on rain thunderstorm rolled its way through the small southern area known as Clinton. The lightning struck, the rain poured, the thunder rumbled quite loudly, but as fast as it came, it disappeared. That was only one thunderstorm. More storms formed, and more trotted its way across the midnight sky. Since the majority of the weather was always sunny, everybody in town found it impossible to sleep.

Sure, it was difficult to fall asleep amidst a heavy storm, but it wasn’t just the fact that it was storming that had everybody, or Tricia at least, wide-awake. To her, it was something else; something awkward, but indescribable. She was the one who was able to fall asleep, but as she awoke around the three o’clock hour to simply shut her window and go to the bathroom, she wasn’t even drowsy. Her legs didn’t hurt. Her eyes didn’t feel heavy. She didn’t even remember yawning once. Naturally, it seemed fairly odd to her that she was able to be so alert, but at the same time a harmless, yet strong feeling of tightness had settled itself into the pit of her stomach. It didn’t hurt; it was just there. Once she’d pushed her window shut, she realized that it must’ve been there for a while. Tricia had been tossing and turning for at least forty-five minutes before she actually got up out of bed.

Despite this feeling of sheer uneasiness, Tricia, sometimes known as Trish to her parents and friends, managed to close the window closest to her bed and go to the bathroom with ease, overall un-phased. As she climbed back into bed, a strong crack of lightning split the night sky in two. The pain in her stomach intensified as the lightning struck the ground, and retreated as the lightning gave way to the thunder. Tricia wasn’t scared, and she wasn’t to concerned about her stomach or the lightning, but at the same time, she couldn’t help but wonder.

Tricia rolled over amongst the throng of crinkled sheets that’d swallowed her up overnight and groaned as she narrowly opened her eyes; the sun was up and now she was too. That was not the way she wanted to start her morning. She rubbed her right eye with a shaky left hand and struggled to see the end of the bed just in front of her. She hated waking up, especially when she didn’t have her contacts in. This blurriness could’ve either been due to that, or the fact that she was just opening her eyes for the first time in nearly five hours. Either one would do.

Once she’d woken up just a little more, she managed to find her black-rimmed glasses sitting pretty on her dresser. She placed them on and simply lie on her back, at least until she heard sounds from downstairs. Sounds from downstairs signified that people in her household were already awake, but this struck Tricia odd because the majority of the time, they out slept her. Even so, Tricia shook her head. This was probably just an off morning for them. She didn’t think much of it, and fell back into slumber for just a few more minutes.

When she woke up again nearly fifteen minutes later, she realized that the sounds from downstairs had gotten louder and grown in volume. The only thing she could assume is that some of the members of her family were upstairs. She could easily make out the voices of her mother, her father, and her slightly younger sister, Adrienne. That was her whole family, with the exception of her older brother, Grant, of course. Adrienne was the youngest at seventeen, Tricia was in the middle at twenty, and Grant was the elder of the three at twenty-one. Tricia and Grant’s birthdays were three days apart, while Adrienne was all the way at the other end of the year in January. Today the date was October 3rd. Grant’s birthday was the fifth, and Tricia’s was the eighth.

An annual ritual in the family household, the week before anybody’s birthday always buzzed with excitement. Nearly every topic of conversation had to do with a birthday. Whether it be presents, cake, or even the now fictional birthday party, you name the conversation and she could promise that it somehow alluded to birthdays. This is why, two days within Grant’s twenty-second birthday, Tricia woke up expecting to hear talk about Grant’s coming up. Instead, she heard the exact opposite. If she wasn’t mistaken, she almost thought she heard her mother crying.

Slowly, Tricia pulled back the sheets of her bed so she could climb out. She sat up and felt a strong tinge in her stomach. She glanced down, and saw nothing, but soon remembered. Her pain had not gone away. At this, her brow furrowed, but it still did not stop her from climbing out of bed. Things were getting very peculiar the more Tricia woke up, and the more things grew weird, the more she soon began to worry. When she saw the small clock on her dresser, she knew things were really not normal. The time was 6:26 AM. Tricia woke up naturally. She didn’t know what was going on, but something was wrong.

She quickly skipped brushing her hair or teeth as she hopped out of bed, but as she inched near the door intending to open it and head downstairs, she realized she had to go no further than the hallway. A chill ran down her spine. Her mother was crying. Her father was consoling her mother, and as Tricia opened her door just a little further, she saw Adrienne. Her younger sister was on her knees, her head buried in her hands. She too was crying.

A focused person, Tricia’s first reaction would be to instantly join the party and freak out without knowing what was going on, but whatever this situation was, it was severe enough that Tricia took a minute to herself. She didn’t want to make her presence known just yet. Pressing her back against the wall opposite her door, she leaned her head back and took a deep breath, talking to herself in her mind.

“Tricia, this can’t be that bad. Mom is crying, Adrienne is crying. Grant isn’t awake. What time did Grant get home last night? It has to be okay, focus.” She thought to herself, knowing that Grant did go out last night with his friends to celebrate early the arrival of his birthday. She recalled them going out late, but she did remember Grant giving her one last kiss on the forehead telling her that if the storm got bad, they’d be home no later than three. She got up to go to the bathroom at three, but didn’t hear a thing. Her mother’s cries got louder, interfering with Tricia’s inner thoughts. She nosed her way up to the doorway once again to listen. What she heard froze her still.

“Why did this have to happen? Why did this have to happen to my baby? It can’t be, it can’t be him. Why Grant?”

Tricia too, fell to her knees.
