Date Posted: 19:51:54 06/10/02 Mon **I don't know if I've posted this here or not . . .but here ya go!!** Tonight. Tonight is the night. Tonight is the night that I tell him everything I’ve wanted to tell him for so long. I will tell him how his smile makes my day. How every glance my way makes my heart soar. I'll tell him how much I think about him. Ask him if he thinks about me any. I can remember the first time I laid eyes on him. There was something about him that made him stand out from everyone else. He looked so confident as he greeted the crew members. He stood tall, looking everyone in the eyes as he spoke or was spoken to. I would say it was love at first sight . . .if I believed in that sort of thing. FLASHBACK I fiddled with the drawstrings on my pants as I waited in a "line" to meet the guys. The guys that had all of America in a frenzy. The guys that could make a twelve year old girl faint at the drop of a dime. The guys that were responsible for me living out of a suitcase for three months. As I tied the strings into their fourth consecutive knot, I head a voice. "Welcome to the family" he said. I looked up . . .and forgot how to talk. My heart started beating so hard that I could hear it in my head. I was sure that if I tried to speak that it would jump out of my body onto the floor. Not my idea of a great first impression. When I didn't reply, he continued. "I saw you paying more attention to your pants than the people in here. Don't worry, we're not all that bad." he said. Then he smiled. He smiled the smile that would turn my world upside down. It wasn't perfect, but it was his. Which made it perfect to me. "Nice pants by the way." he said. "Um, thank you." I managed to choke out. He nodded and walked away. I tried not to stare as he left . . .tried being the key word. END FLASHBACK Now I know what you're thinking.. . ."where did this empowerment come from?" To tell you the truth, I have no idea. One minute I'm eating a bowl of soup, the next I’m declaring my love for a man I've only spoken to in passing. Call me crazy. Even with my new found assertiveness, I still needed a push in the right direction. I needed someone who could tell me what I wanted to hear. Someone who would make me stick to my word. I knew just who that someone was. I laugh as I think back to our phone conversation. How she snaked her way in. How she is now sitting next to me in the car on the way to the party. Oh, she's good. Which is exactly why I called her. FLASHBACK "You should tell him how you feel. I'm sure he'll be understanding , based on what you've told me about him." she said while smacking her gum. I hated it when she smacked. "Oh please girl! No way. That's not gonna happen" I said chickening out. "The last thing I need is for him to act all weird around me because of my little school girl crush. I'd rather just forget about it. Just let it pass" "Girl! What's the matter with you!?! Do you know what I'd do to that boy if I were in your shoes? Hell, I'd probably have a ring on my finger right now." she bragged. I rolled my eyes as she continued. "Matter of fact, I think that's what I'm gonna do. If you won't stake your claim on the boy, what's stopping me? I'm sure that I would have no problem what so ever." she proclaimed. My jaw dropped as the anger begin to build inside of me. I could almost feel the steam shooting out of my ears. “Oh! So that's how it's gonna be, huh?" I retorted standing up ready to throw my cordless across the room. "YES! IF YOU DON'T GET OFF OF YOUR ASS AND GO GET YOUR MAN!" she yelled. Then it dawned on me. She was trying to upset me. She was using her own little version of reverse psychology. And it worked. "All right. You've made your point." I sighed. Sitting back down much calmer than before. "I'll tell him." Before I could get the words out of my mouth she exclaimed "When! Oh you should tell him at the party thing tonight! I'm sure he'll go for it. You're such an awesome girl!!! Oooo I should come too! You know, for moral support. I'm so happy! You have to prom . ." "All right already!" I interrupted. "Geez, I'll tell him tonight if you will just shut the hell up!" "You promise?" she questioned. "Yeah, yeah . .all right" I replied standing and stretching. "Oh goody goody!" she said like a five year old. I rolled my eyes as she continued. "I'm so excited now! I hope they are as fine in person as they are on TV! I can't believe that you're gonn . . ." I toned her out as she continued to babble. As I walked to my room, I realized something. "Hey! You just invited yourself to this shin dig tonight!" I chuckled. "If I didn't need you there, I'd be mad right now." "Awwww! You know you love me! Now tell me what time you are gonna pick me up! Oh! what should I wear??" END FLASHBACK That girl is crazy. But she's the best friend a person could ask for. She's been there for me through everything, from my braces to the death of my grandfather. I don't think there is anything I wouldn't do for her. I smile as I think about our friendship. "What are you over there grinning about? Ooooo I bet you're thinking of 'lover boy' and how many babies you two are gonna make tonight" she jokes. "Oh whatever girl. Don't get your hopes up too much cause mine sure aren't" I say pulling into the club parking lot. "Is this the place?" She asks checking her make-up in the mirror. "Yeah, it's just a small gathering. The guys didn't see the point in renting out a huge place" I answer. "Let's get this show on the road" I say after taking a deep breath. Getting out of the car, straightening out my top and skirt, I begin to wonder if this was indeed a good idea. I mean, it’s not like he and I have had any deep connection. Hell, the boy has barely even touched me. But I do remember the times he has. FLASHBACK “Ugh, if I have to carry one more freakin’ box today I am gonna quit. I swear. I’ll quit, quit, quit . .” I mumbled to myself. It was week two of the tour, and my body had not adjusted well to life on the road. My back ached constantly and I was tired as hell. I stopped at a nearby water fountain and proceeded to drink. “Ugh!” I said in disgust, “I would sell my soul to the first person with a bottle of water. Damn city crap.” “Well, well. I guess that would be me now wouldn’t it?” he joked. I turned around and there he was, smiling that smile. Making my knees go weak. I could hear violins playing. I saw rainbows. I felt a cool ocean breeze. I felt as if . . .“Um, are you OK?” he asked, rescuing me from my romance novel of a mind. “Oh, yeah. I’m just dandy” I replied. I felt like a jackass. I felt like one of his millions of pre-pubescent fans. I had been gaping at him with my mouth wide open. I bet he expected me to scream and pull at his hair . .or something. “Guess you heard me talking a second ago, huh?” “Yes I did. It was quite entertaining if you ask me. Now what’s this about selling your soul?” he questioned. “I was just, um, thirsty and this water isn’t even fit for prisoners and I left my water someplace that I’m sure will come back to me later on tonight when I try to sleep . . not that I will be able to sleep because I am so sore and the only thing that helps is when . .” “Woah! Calm down hun.” he interrupted. “Here, I happen to have an extra bottle of water with your name on it” He handed me the water, smiled again, and turned to walk away. “Oh, and by the way, you can keep your soul.” he said while patting me on the head. With that, he left. He left me dazed and confused. He left me stupid. END FLASHBACK God! Why am I such a retard around him? It’s the smile. It’s always been the smile. I am addicted to it, much like a junkie is to crack. It’s like my drug or something. I do know that was the best damn water I’ve ever tasted in my life. But enough about that There’s something more important to do right now. Walking up the steps to the club, I take one last glance at my car. This is my last chance to back out. Should I really go through with it? What if he laughs at me? What if he tells all of his friends and they tell their friends and the whole world ends up laughing at me. ‘Snap out of it! You are going to do this!’ I tell myself. I have to do this. I HAVE TO. As we make our way into the club, I see him. It appears that he’s looking my way too. He looks so good. He’s wearing a nice pair of black slacks and a simple button up gray shirt. Did I say simple? There’s nothing simple about the way he’s wearing it. Damn. ‘OK. Time to focus. Stay calm, breath in, breath out. Good. Now just keep doing that and you’ll be fine’ I coach myself mentally. “Oh girl! Look, there he is” Dawn screeches while grabbing my arm. “He’s pretty cute. Hell, we are virtually surrounded by beautiful people. Oooooo . .is that! Oh my God! It is!. I don’t know why I am surprised that he’s here. I mean it is his party too. Oh gosh! Look at me! I’m a mess. Do I have . . .” Did I forget to mention that Dawn has a chronic case of diarrhea . . .of the mouth? Cause she does. She always rambles on and on, often saying the first thing that comes to her mind. Bless her heart. “Dawn, you have to calm down or I will take you home right now.” I urge. “I need you to be normal for just one night. Please. For me?” “I’m all right now, I just had to get it out of my system. OK girl, you ready?” she asks while glancing over my shoulder. “Because he’s heading this way.” ‘Oh shit! OK, do the breathing thing again, in , out, in, out’ I think. I casually glance over my shoulder, just to check. And he IS heading this way . .Oh shit! He’s looking right at me. I can feel my heart beat faster. I can feel my palms sweating. I can feel Dawn’s death grip on my arm. “Ouch! Let go!” I whisper to her. When she doesn’t release me, I look back at her. She’s got this glazed over look in her eyes and her mouth is slightly ajar. I know that look so well. It’s the same one I had the first time I saw him. Damn. This isn’t good. As he gets closer, he smiles, and my knees get weak. “Hey girl! Having fun?” he questions. “Oh, um, I just got here. But it looks pretty neat so far.” I say. Neat? NEAT? Did I just say neat? Can someone kill me now before I make an enormous ass out of myself? “Good. So, uh, who’s your friend?” he asks. Friend? What friend? Oh yeah the one responsible for cutting off the circulation in my arm. “Oh, sorry about that. Dawn, this is . . .” I begin. “No need for introductions. I already know who you are. I’m Dawn. It’s very nice to meet you” she gushes. If I didn’t know better, I’d say she was trying to flirt. But I know better . .right? “Well, the pleasure’s all mine Dawn. Would you like to dance?” he asks her. “Sure. That’s would be great.” she looks at me. He stares at her. My heart breaks a little. “You don’t mind, do you?” She asks at me, asking for permission with her eyes. Like I could really stop her. “Oh, no. You two go have fun. I’ll just go find. . .” I say. But they are already gone. I watch as they dance together. I watch as they talk and laugh together. My heart breaks a bit more. Then I watch as he leans in, and kisses her. My heart breaks a bit more. I watch her kiss him back. My heart snaps in half. Tonight. Tonight is the night. Tonight will be the night that I lose the love of my life to someone I love.
