Date Posted: 22:08:01 04/10/02 Wed I was supposed to be retired, but it's more boring down there in fan fiction florida then I thought. So yeah, I'm back. I'm trying something different, a different type of character, than Tamilia, Lily, Tessa, Seven...all my heroines have been a lot like me and that's boring, so we're going to do something different. I'm not planning what's going to happen. I have a general idea, but I'm just going to write and whatever happens happens. Enjoy! Chapter One~Goin' To California Alexandria sat on the balcony of her hotel. The pacific breezes tickled her long legs crossed on the railing. With a wild flower tucked behind her hair, her piercing hazel eyes surveyed the miles of beach. She sipped her strawberry margarita and sighed in with peaceful contentment. The sun spilled over the California horizon, and the fairy-taled rays of light sliced majestically through the clouds. Her full lips curled over the straw, bringing the cold, fruity drink into her mouth. She did it. She managed to leave everything behind. All the stress and pressure and expectations were miles behind her, seemingly worlds away. She blinked in disbelief as she eyed the heavenly California landscape. Her hands were still blistered from gripping the steering wheel with a white-knuckled, iron grip. She drove across her vast country, barely noticing the deep green grasses of Indiana rumble and change into the arid, brown, jagged rock of Arizona. Alexandria drove until she ran out of land, until she hit the ocean, until she was dirty and tired and on an emotional high from escaping her problems. She took her jar of cash and checked into a nice hotel. Taking luxurious baths with rose petals in the water and sipping colored drinks detailed with sliced fruit and tiny paper umbrellas. Unfortunately, her jar of cash, her life’s savings, had dwindled to twenty-seven dollars and one of her credit cards was dedicated solely to the price of the hotel. Alexandria got up and padded across the cool tile, into her room. She smelled the sweetness of the pink roses sitting on a small table near the door. Her only chance at receiving another night of shelter was a job interview a colleague from her alma mater had lined up for her before she disappeared. Alexandria showered, dressed in a beige, sleeveless dress, bone shoes and curled her long black hair in gentle spiral curls down her back, clipping the curls away from her face. Grabbing her large, but dainty bag, she stepped out of her hotel room and into the beauty of the day. ** Hailing a cab, she rode into the meter hit ten dollars and she walked the rest of the way through the California heat. Sliding darkened sunglasses over her eyes, Alexandria smiled wistfully as she blended into the seemingly flawless inhabitants of Los Angeles. She attempted not too look like a tourist as she eyed the towering palm trees that lined the city streets or ogled at the limousines that rolled sleekly down the wide boulevards. Just as she was about to get lost in the allure of the city, it began to rain. Thick, heavy, gray drops thundered down from the skies and Alexandria still have five more blocks to go. The rain easily coated her brand new dress, soaking the delicate silk blends. Her curls dripped and the rain washed over her olive cheeks. She shouldered her purse and scattered through the throngs of people that undauntedly opened their umbrellas and continued about their day. Alexandria reached the hotel. Her feet squished in her shoes as the walked across the vast lobby of another, more lavish hotel, where the interview was being held. Checking the clock on the wall, she only had twenty minutes before her interview. Cursing under her breath, she approached the suited man behind the desk, who eyed her in alarm. “You’re dripping on the carpet, miss.” She glared. “May…I help you?” “I need clothes. Do you know of any stores close by where I can purchase some?” “Miss, we have a very nice store here in the hotel. Down that corridor, through the glass doors,” he replied. Alexandria pushed her damp hair over her shoulder and nodded in a terse appreciation. She trotted to the store and quickly picked out an embroidered crepe frill-edged dress that was lilac with a deep purple flowing patterns. Running into the dressing room, she opened up her soaked leather bag and pulled out a handkerchief, sniffling and shivering, Alexandria peeled the wet fabric from her body and hastily blotted herself dry. She pulled on the dress, awkwardly zipping it up the back. Glancing at her reflection in the mirror, she smiled. It actually fit. Inching closer to the mirror, she patted her face dry and thankfully her make up was still in place, but her hair was a frizzy mess. Pulling out her brush, she battled with her long tangled tresses. Alexandria yanked the tags off the dress and stepped out of her shoes, stuffing them in her bag. The attendant was waiting for her return. She smiled brightly. “The dress looks exquisite on you, miss.” “Thank you. I have an interview in thirteen minutes, “ she rushed, “and I need some shoes and a scarf or something to tie up my hair.” “Right this way…we’ll get you all dolled up in no time.” ** Alexandria walked confidently into the small, quaint conference room. Her still wet hair had been stylishly wrapped in an ivory cloth, the ends lined in lace. She smiled at the large, well-dressed man behind the desk and shook his hand firmly. “Ms. Kinsington?” “Yes, sir.” “Just call me Mr. Wright.” Alexandria smiled brightly. “Sure.” Mr. Wright chuckled stiffly and unbuttoned the jacket of his Armani suit. “I’ll make a note of that. Please have a seat. I hope you didn’t get caught in the rain on the way over.” Alexandria smiled deviously. “I managed to stay dry.” “Very well. I’ve have reader your resume and the recommendation from Sasha Wiley back in Boston. She said a lot of complimentary things about you, Alexandria.” “I’m glad to hear that, Sasha…HE’S been a great colleague and friend.” Johnny Wright closed his filed and knitted his hands together as he eyed the young, African Amerian woman intensely. “You understand that Chris and Justin, whom you’d be working with, are very famous and you’d be their personal assistants. It isn’t a very glamorous job. It’s actually quite grueling with the constant traveling, long hours. It’s quite a life to get adjusted to. What makes you think that you can handle such a large job?” Alexandria thought for several moments and smiled wistfully. She eyed the man intensely and shook her head. “I know I can handle this job, Mr. Wright. I paid my way through college. I worked full time and went to school full time. I supported myself and it wasn’t because my parents didn’t have the money, they did, but I had to prove to myself that I could do it. And I did. I graduated with a 3.92 GPA and I did it myself. Then I packed up everything I owned and drove three thousand miles across the country. I have seventeen dollars in my wallet and that’s it. I want to work with Justin and Chris mainly because they did the same thing I’m doing. They took risks for their career and they sacrificed their bodies and their times with their families to succeed. I gave up a lot coming here and I know that when I leave, I only have one more night in my hotel.” She fidgeted with the material of her dress. “I am a fast learner and I want to travel and see the country and work with two very talented men…I really want this job, Mr. Wright. I think that I’ve earned it.” “Very well stated, but I can guarantee you that there are hundreds of other applicants with twice as much experience that will say the exact same thing,” Johnny countered stolidly. Alexandria’s face fell slightly, but her shoulders remained squared and her posture was strong. “Of course they will, but I’m coming from a very different perspective. I’ve worked hard for the past five years and it’s the only way I know how to work.” Mr. Wright attempted to hide his smile, but Alexandria caught the slight flickering in the corner of his lips. “This interview is pretty much over, but you do have two more. Since you’ll be working with Christopher and FuMan, Justin on his charity and NSYNC’s Challenge For the Children then you need to be interviewed by Justin and Chris. So, if you’ll just follow me.” Alexandria followed Johnny down the hall and into another small, sparcely decorated room. Chris Kirkpatrick was twirling listlessly in a large leather chair, headphones over his ears. There was no table. It had been pushed in the corner of the room. There were two other empty chairs and a small glass table off to the side with doughnuts, coffee and orange juice. “Christopher,” Johnny snapped. Chris arched and eyebrow and sat up straight in the chair, turning off his headphones. “Another one? Johnny boy, you’re killing me, this is supposed to be my day off.” “You never get a day off, Chris,” Johnny smiled. “This is Ms. Kinsingtion.” “Welcome Ms. Kinsington,” Chris smile, standing up to shake her hand. “Hello, Mr. Kirkpatrick.” Chris eyed the door as Johnny left the room and he grinned wildly. “Call me Chris, I get the job done, but I’m not with the formal stuff.” Alexandria nodded. “Chris, got it.” Chris glanced at the paper in his hands and smiled. “May I call you Lacey?” “No,” she responded curtly. “I’m not to fond of that. I go by my middle name, Alexandria, or just Dria if you like.” “That’s fine. Let’s get started. This should be pretty short. Um, Justin was supposed to be here, but he had to make a run to the emergency room instead,” Chris responded softly. Alexandria frowned. “I hope he’s okay.” “Me too…and I’m praying it’s more of a precaution. I haven’t had the chance to review your resume, do you have any experience in fashion?” “Yes, I did a lot of fashion shows for charity during school. I also worked as a costumer for various plays and musicals during high school and college.” “Cool. Are you good at assisting people?” Alexandria laughed lightly. “Yes, Chris, otherwise I don’t think I’d be applying for this job,” she giggled. “Just checking. Do you enjoy our music?” “Of course. I take my nieces to concerts all the time.” “Have you ever bought anything FuMan related?” She shifted unsteadily. “No, Chris, I haven’t.” Chris pouted. “Why not?” “Because I’m poor. I put myself through college and didn’t really have the money to shop anyway but Target.” The rest of the interview was simply bantering back and fourth. Alexandria soon understood that Chris’s segment of the interview wasn’t about her credentials or her experience, but how well their personalities meshed together. Chris was a very sharp-witted person and she fed off his energy, they chatted about everything but the highly competitive job interview. After about half and hour of flowing, enjoyable conversation. Chris sighed and checked his watch. He rubbed his hands on the things of his loose torn jeans and smiled. “Okay, I think we’re done. I have all your numbers and we’ll be in touch within a few days.” Alexandria smiled. “Thank you so much, Chris.” “You welcome so much, Dria.” Alexandria shook his hand and turned around, her uneven skirt flowing gracefully behind her. “Dria?” Chris called out softly?” “Yes?” “I love the scarf in combination with the dress. That’s definitely hot.” “Thanks. I hope Justin feels better.” ** Alexandria sat in her large queen-sized bed perched over her journal. Her purple pen whisked over the lines as she wrote, capturing the essence of her mind, hoping to find some answers hiding in-between her thoughts. “I think my life has been eclipsed. By some sort of darkness. Everything is heavy. I don’t know where the light was…I thought I’d come to California and the fairy tale would happen and everything would be okay. But things are just as lost and unfamiliar here as they are in Maryland. California is a beautiful place, but it’s not my home. Maryland is where I was born, but it’s not my home. I just don’t belong anywhere…all I can do now is wait for the moon to sweep away from the sun and for the light to return…” ** The phone rang as Alexandria was packing up her things, ready to move to a cheaper hotel. The past four days had been glorious, but she had no choice. The money was dwindling as was her hopes of remaining in Los Angeles. She grabbed the beige receiver and said greeted the caller as she sat on her bugling suitcase and attempting to zip it closed. “Yes?” “Lacey?” She scowled into the phone. “Oh, Dria, sorry. I forgot. It’s Chris.” Alexandria was too busy zipping up her suitcase and caught her finger in the metal bindings. “Shit…” She sucked on her throbbing finger. “Sorry about that Chris. I was just packing up my things…” “Cool cuz I need you in Florida tomorrow,” Chris grinned. “Excuse me?” “You got the job and we need you in Florida tomorrow. The employee you’re replacing needs to leave sooner than we expected. I’ll have a messenger send over the ticket…be at LAX at 6:30am,” Chris replied matter-of-factly. Alexandria smiled genuinely. “Sure, Chris. I’ll see you tomorrow.” She smiled throughout the darkness…maybe this was her chance, to escape the darkness… [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
