I had never thought of white space before this assignment. If asked, I believe I would have thought white space on a web page was a sign the web page was not "developed" enough. I have been workling on my pages, and so far, have no white space included. Now I will be rethinking my layout and plans for color. I was not surprised to read that lack of white space is a common error made my inexperienced designers. I can relate!
There are numerous reasons why a designer would want to utilize white space. Three that struck me were:
1. Headlines should be eye-catching and adding extra white space around a headline can enhance it more than large type.
(I was at Chestnut Hill today working on my page, and I kept making my font in my initial banner larger and larger. I think I will try adding a white border instead.)
2. White space leads the eye to the focal point. The eye is attracted to the white space and this strategy can pull the users eye in the direction the designer chooses, simply by using white. White can then be used throughout the page, so the focal point is not the only interesting aspect.
3. White space allows the viewer a "break". Browsing the web can be a visual strain on the eyes. Web pages require more "work" from the eyes while viewing than print pages. Incorporating white space alleviates the constant need to focus and refocus.

While searching for three web pages that use white space, I found two easily. The third I had difficulty locating. I was surprised this seemed to be a bit of a challenge. I found many sites seem to be full of color, though it may be subtly used, and lack a significant use of white space.

1. http://www.ianschragerhotels.com/flash.html
I loved this site! The buttons were the neatest I have ever seen. There was much white space incorporated throughout. The eye was really drawn to the most prominant features, the pictures of the hotels.

2. http://www.coach.com/index_a.asp.
This site had a white background. I thought the background gave the site a crisp, clean look. There were handbags featured and they really stood out.

3. http://www.google.com/
I know this seems too easy! This is the site I used to find the others. I was searching by using Google and really having bad luck. I then took a look at Google, and realized it utilized white space! The background is white and the name Google is prominent, as is the seach area. So simple, yet effective!

After reading these articles, and searching the web, I will make it my goal to use this designing strategy on my pages.
