I personally worry that hair up in the older groups is riskier as well so I err on the side of hair down unless I know the system. Basically, imo, the more natural systems tend to like hair down (Little Miss, Festival, Cover Miss, Sunburst). I would also tend to go with hair down at prelims or smaller states. The systems that don't care are the big glitz systems, especially nationals. There, you will see all types from very sculptured styles (big this year with a certain group), to "barbies", to poufs with back hair down, to updos. I would say at most of the big nationals, the looks are pretty evenly divided between all of the above in the 10-12. Older girls tended to wear the simpler "hair down" looks.

It seems that every time we put hair up, at least one judge will say to wear it down. We don't wear hair up anymore no matter what system we are attending.
