Don't worry about the hips so much as your shoulders should be square to the target at impact. How you get into that position is by the underhand swing motion of the right arm.

If you start the downswing with the right arm and hand, it is easier to "feel" the right elbow in front of the hip. This also should improve your trajectory, unless you are playing the ball too far back in your stance or releasing too early. I have found the hips part of the swing to be a reaction to the downswing motion not a catalyst for the downswing.
