This is the reasoning that caused me to guess at 50-79% gross margins.

Rather than lack of intelligence that would cause people to go that way, I think the hook is the system/philosophy/cult relationship that people associate with the equipment.

I can relate. Before I came to my senses and bought Golfsmith forged blades I was going to get Mizuno MP29s (I later lost my senses and got them anyway). During this crase I was also looking at Mizuno golf bags, shoes... And there was not even a philosophical/technique hook.
