Subject: distance from ball ?

It seems that I have great control over the club if I grip down the shaft and stand a bit closer to the ball. In this manner I can make a relatively good shoulder turn and just hammer the ball. I don't make good contact and I lose balance if I stand as far away as some NGers suggest. Does anyone else find this to be the case?
