Just last week I went to a teacher's convention. The best work shop was a lady who teaches relaxation techniques to school kids-- prek through college.
She described the following exercise. I was quite moved:

Pass out one m & m to each of the kids in the class. Instruct them not to eat it. Spend some time studying the m & m. Notice it's shape (more eggish than round) notice the font of the m, the shade of the colors (I hate the new shades!!!) etc. After five minutes of this, she invites the students to eat their single m & m. To truly notice it! She challenges the students: what is life like, living it one m & m at a time, instead of swallowing huge mouthfulls. My supplemental thought: How foolish we are, chasing ever larger bags of m & m's, so that we might have a more complete experience. Consider how much popcorn sizes at the movies, french fry sizes, everything, is getting bigger. Of course, this is merely metaphorical; but it's so important to see this ridiculous rat race, we zip through things, rather than experience them, so we seek out larger and larger things, which we zip through faster and faster...
Sorry for the rant. I was moved by this demonstration. If you are interested, I'll say a little more about the witnessing you mention as the Budhists proscribe it. Nice to hear from you, Schwabra!
