O.K., Paul. We could spend some time talking about some pretty dreadful ethics proscribed by the bible. But I won't. I'll focus on something else.
There are parts of the bible which simply don't have a literal meaning. Consider the opening of the Gospel of John. Jesus is a word. What word? What language. He was only a sound? He seems much more to me.
Or consider that the accounts of the flood, when translated accurately, speak not of clouds, but of great holes being opened up in the sky and water rushing through them. The implication is that the world is somehow surrounded by water. And this, in fact, was the world view of those who wrote the bible.
Similarly, the bible says that the sun was stopped so day could be extended so the battle could be continued. (Sorry, can't find the bk; it was Joshua, I think.)
We both know the sun doesn't move much and you'd need to hold the Earth still to extend a day. And we INTERPRET the bible to mean that the Earth was held still.

It's an important, fundamental fact that their is no thought without interpretation. A way for people to claim they are approaching something correctly is to deny this. But, as you so frequently point out, people making claims doesn't at all effect the truth of their claims.

And finally, you're last statement begs the question. You say: "God has an important message for mankind which is life ordeath for everyone, dont you think God could and would preserve that message in tact? Of course he would."

If I accepted that we were damned or saved based on the idea the explicit recognition of one interpretation of one savoir/holy book, then I would find it surprising if this holy book was allowed by God to be mutated.
However, if I have a set of documented beliefs about the evolution of this book (for example, the date between Jesus life and the writing of the Gospels, or the non-uniformity of what is considered cannonical scripture) then this seems to take precedence over the claims of the book itself; it is the reliabality of this book which is questioned in the first place, so the claims within that book can't count as much for evidence.
