Subject: Commandments

The Hebrew word is "mitzvot." It has been translated as "good deed"- good: "commandment"- better; or "religious act" -best IMO.

The seven universal Mitzvot Noahide Laws):

1) Do not murder
2) Do not steal
3) Do not worship false gods
4) Do not be sexually immoral
5) Do not eat the limb of an animal before it is killed.
6) Do not curse God
7) Set up courts to bring offenders to justice

The 10 Principles (often called Commandments):

1) "I am the Eternal your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt..."
2) "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make a graven image..."
3) "You shall not use the name of the Eternal in vain(literally for nothing)
4) "Remember and observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy.."
5) "Honor your father and your mother... "
6) "You shall not murder."
7) "You shall not commit adultery."
8) "You shall not steal."
9) "You shall not bear false witness..."
10) "You shall not covet..."

The big list, the 613 mitzvot of Jewish tradition.

Do not let the number scare you away, there are 248 positive ones, and 365 negative ones. 200 can not be observed because there is no Temple or Priests carrying out sacrifice. Some 26 are dependent on living in Israel. That is 226 out of 613 that cannot be done by most Jews today.

Examples of positive mitzvot:

Believe in God, love God, study and teach Torah, build a sanctuary for God, participate in synagogue services, say blessings after meals, spiritually cleanse in a ritual bath, leave gleanings for the poor, tithe to the poor, rest on Sabbath, eat matzah on Passover, fast on Yom Kippur, give charity.

Examples of negative mitzvot:

Don't believe in any other God, don't worship idols, don't get tattoos (or decorative scars), don't enter the sanctuary intoxicated, don't delay payments of vows, don't eat unclean animals, don't eat blood, don't eat leavened products on Passover, don't fail to give charity, don't convict ont he testimony of a single witness.
