Comrades,
I am not kidding about the title of my post. Yes, I had dinner with
former Senator Bob Dole this evening. Let me explain.
Between 6 and 6:30 each day, I usually go to the K&W Cafeteria
for dinner (and today was no different).
As I walked in, I noticed many people with Elizabeth Dole for the
US Senate Buttons. I asked one of the cashiers about it. She
told me that Bob Dole is in the restaurant talking to the people,
so I walked past him to eat my meal.
About 5 minutes later, he walked up my table to greet me. I said
(point blank to him as I shook his had) that I have nothing personal
against him nor his wife, Liddy, but I will NOT be voting for Elizabeth
Dole in November.
He was taken aback a little. Then he asked what are some of
my concerns that would make me not want to back Liddy Dole?
I told him that I am aware that she is not a supporter of universal
medical care, nor a supporter of organized labor, nor advocate
the abolition of the death penalty, nor desire to lift the sanctions
against Iraq, nor want to do anything that would help working
families in this country. And I added that eventhough I'm critical
of the two party system, that Paul Wellstone represent what was
best about the Democratic Party and the progressive movement
in general.
He chuckled a little and said that that was what is best about
America. We can disagree and be civil. I told him that I agree.
Then, I added that he is lucky that he wasn't Newt Gingrich,
Trent Lott, nor Jesse Helms, because I wouldn't have been so
diplomatic. He looked befuddled and wished me a nice day.
