We do have a certain amount of liberty, and there is for most people opportunity, not just for wealth, but self-expression and personal development. We are as a culture anti-authoritarian at least in thought, and have a basic sense of fair play. And we have a system that keeps the government out of our faces. We have a sense of destiny, and we are not prone to fatalism.

The downside is that we are very provincial with a sense of entitlement over the rest of the world; believing that we are the richest country in the world because the rest of the world owes us somthing. We have allowed corporatization to destroy what culture we had, and make us more trite. We are anti-intelectual in that we believe we have the answers before we even search for them. And outside of military service and patriotism when we are attacked, we do not have a deep sense of community or accountability to people not in our personal circles. We are willing to cross an ocean and kill for our country, but we don't bother to cross a street to vote once every 2 years.

These are of course all gross generalizations with plenty of exceptions going both ways. Generally speaking I'm optimistic and think we have a good thing going here, with the potential to be much better. And I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, except maybe the Netherlands or Lichtenstein.
