Subject: Chicken feet are a Dim Sum delicacy
In reply to: The Serpent 's message, "Re: Okay, I don't eat chicken feet." on 15:08:58 05/27/02 Mon

I've been eating them since I was a kid. In Chinatown in SF is a dim sum restaraunt set in an old ballroom, usually a large crowd with the food being brought around on carts. It has been my opinion since 5 years old that the Chinese are the best cooks in the world, particularly the Cantonese. You basically flag down the cart pusher for what you want, engage in charades because she usually doesn't speak English, and they keep track of the tab by stamping a card at your table. One day when I was about 8, I saw cart with bowls of some sort of meat I didn't recognize. I asked my mother if I could try it and she flagged down the woman. The woman seemed puzzled, and warned us with a heavy accent, "chicken feet you know. Chicken feet."

My mother asked me if I was sure, and I nodded. I pretty much liked everything as a child except oatmeal and Kraft Macaroni and Cheese (didn't smell like cheese to me). All of the Chinese at the tables around me stared as they watched this 8 year old white kid eat chicken feet. I loved it. They were in a barbecue type sauce, and I go back there for them to this day.

So it's not exactly a white trash thing, but I had to throw it in.

I also love Menudo and chicken liver sandwiches, though, I also don't eat much meat. Mostly a pocket book based habit, from college and law school when I ate on a top ramen budget.
