Subject: Colombian bombing...

Two days ago, i don't know if everybody heard, a Columbian presidential candidate was the target for a bombing in Bogota. 3 people got killed and 15 were wounded. The candidate Mr. Uribe, is leading in the polls right now and will probably win the presidential election on May 26th, that is if he can survive that long.
Only a week ago, suspected guerrillas kidnapped 12 state lawmakers in Cali and are still keeping them hostage in the mountains.
Last year over 3500 individuals have been killed in this undercover civil war between Guerrillas and regime.
Also in the news: The brazilian female presidential candidate we were talking about in class retracted her bid on the presidency and now runs for governor instead. The political pressure against her increased after a huge scandal (well in Brazil...) revolving around suspected bribe money accepted by her.
Yep, good ol' Latin America, always good for some revolution, guerrilla attacks, corrupt politicians, etc...
Oh before I forget...apparently Senior US Administration officials (which means high up in the chain of command) met with the anti-chavez coalition shortly before the coup occured last week. Another American involvement in a coup d'etat in Latin America? Well, they (US officials) say that they didn't provide any weapons, or help or even had any support for the coalition. Nevertheless, they admit that the US does not like Chavez and made that clear to the anti-chavez coalition. I am sure they got the idea there. A little moral nudge by the US administration was probably enough to push this so-called coalition over the edge. Well I am not defending Chavez either, he's for me the lesser of two "evils"(god I'm using Bush lingo too now...:).
So at least the gas price is not going to get higher after Venezuela somewhat calmed down again. I am also happy for the Venezuelan people - the last thing they needed was a radical military regime.
