Mr Vampire DVD (1985)
Reviewed by Almar Haflidason

A smash hit on release and a popular choice on late night Channel 4, the supernatural kung-fu extravaganza that is "Mr Vampire" gets a welcome DVD release that shows you the film like never before.

TECHNICAL FEATURES

Picture Comprehensive restoration work has knocked years off the appearance of this outrageously enjoyable film.

Sound The 5.1 Cantonese sound mix is much richer that the boxy-sounding English dub, but then why would you want to ruin a perfectly good movie by watching it dubbed? Hong Kong Legends have made the right choice here in soundtrack upgrades. Awful English dubs are the scourge of Hong Kong movies and should frankly be banned.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Audio Commentary As Bey Logan reveals, there are some key differences between Hong Kong vampire movies and their western counterparts. He fills in all the background detail on Chinese superstitions, customs, curses, and more. Not only is what he says interesting, but it further improves your enjoyment of the movie, as you can actually begin to fathom the reasoning behind the on screen madness.

A Tribute to Lam Ching-Ying Lam Ching-Ying is one of the stars of this movie, and while his on-screen abilities are obvious, he was also discovered by Bruce Lee, and worked with him on his films. Here Sammo Hung speaks of his close friend, who died before his time and who was famed for his meticulous hard work on set. There are also clips from some of Ching-Ying's films, and a detailed biography on the great man.

Interview Gallery Stars of the film Chin Siu-Ho and Moon Lee chat about their careers and working on "Mr Vampire". Siu-Ho also talks us through a stunt he performed which had him choking back the tears from the pain of doing it. Somewhat ironically the crew decided that his first take wasn't good enough, so shot another five, only to then use the first one!
