Its not silly, but its also not Squad Leader.

Some wargames permit only the top counter to be viewed,
but these use the assumption that the exposed unit would
be covering the front-line and be in contact with the
enemy. In Squad Leader there is no "real battlefield"
justification for only one (or a few) units in a stack
to be known.

Besides, as you play this great game, one soon realizes
that stacking is often a bad thing. Stacking is usually
only worthwhile to take advantage of a good leader's
modifier ... and in those situations one usually wants
to **FIRE** the stack. :-)

In the SL system, what you are thinking about is covered
by concealment and Hidden Initial Placement (HIP). Those
rules seem to cover the issue pretty well.

If you can see your enemy's units, that means that the
scenario designer has indicated by its design that some
battlefield reconnaisance has already been done, likely
by earlier patrols.
