LOL. Losing can be painful, depending upon how rabidly
competitive you happen to be. But it can also be a very
good motivator! The good news with our Squad Leader is that
I have always enjoyed the playing, so winning is like an
extra bonus rather than something that takes all the fun
away. But some things that come to mind:

1) Blame the dice! This is a time-honored activity that
will bring an inderstanding smile to all your fellow SL
players. :-)

2) Learn from your games. A pretty good motivator. With
VSQL PBeM games, you can have a complete record of the game.
Look through the old logfiles and see if you can see things
that you could do differently. If you don't see anything,
chat with another player to gain some potential insights.

3) Read articles. Not enough of those are available yet,
but I'm working on fixing that here on advancephase.com
(pending update to tactics page).

4) Try solitaire. You can set up a simple test, say using
one of the TTS scenarios, and see if you can put your
attacking troops closer to victory by NOT firing AT ALL in
the Prep Fire phase. Learning the importance of maneuver
is one of the hardest things to build into your "tactical
gut training" because its almost impossible to analyze
mathematically.

5) And of course, play a lot. Most of the "better" players
in our community are really just "more experienced" and that
(experience) is just a matter of how much you've played.
Don't worry, the learning process is amazingly fun, and it
also NEVER stops. :-)

6) And finally. Remember that there are two components to
our SL battles. One is doing our best to give our troops
their best opportunity for success and the other is that our
opponent often is there to show us our mistakes. The game
system will often make us pay painfully for our mistakes,
a very realistic attribute of the game, as there are many
combat AARs that (in effect) describe the horrors that
occurred because one side or the other made a big mistake.
Identify what those mistakes are and you will immediately
improve your battlefield tactical decisions!

Hope you find these helpful!
