A continuation of the topic with Alain:

Alain,

Thank you for the clarification. May I ask you if this is correct...

When an AFV and infantry are in a hex, they present two separeat targets.

Yes.

If the AFV is targeted and hit only the AFV, passengers (CE passengers in HT) and CE are effected.

Yes

If the infantry is targeted and hit, any CE, Crew behind guns, passengers (CE passengers in HT) are effected.

Yup, that would be correct. Since hitting the afv is easier than hitting the grunts, a HE shell landing in the middle of the latter should have an effect on the riders, and CE crews/passengers of AFVs.

However, absent a squad or second crew in the same hex as a gun, ordnance can't fire at the crew itself (as you surmise below)

A gun and crew present only one target, a hit on the gun effects the crew w/ the same role on the IFT.

correct.

If a squad is introduced, the ATG and infantry (squad and crew) are both subject to the TH roll (per 48.2 example)

yes and in this case, the TH number is that for the squad. If the squad is hit, so is the crew. And a separate IFT roll is then taken against both (one roll) that roll is then modified for the crew by adding an extra +2 to whatever other tem was present, _provided_ the shot came across the CA of the gun

I excluded tem and CA modifiers in the above.

Thanks for the help.

These rules have been revised to establish an equilibrium between the two game pieces (gun and afv).

Alain
