I know this is an old thread, but maybe someone else can check my understanding even if the original poster has moved on.

Briefly: no, that's not legit. Ignore the squad and look at the example in rule 17.5. Although the MMG's LOS passes through J4 on the way to I7, if the MMG were shooting directly at J4, there'd be no penetration beyond J4 because of the building.

But what I think the original poster may have been asking is this. Look at the example in rule 17.8. Although the counter under the LMG isn't shown, assume it's a squad. Obviously the squad can combine its firepower factor with the LMG, attack BB9, and have the LMG affect EE9 with the same diceroll. But can the squad instead fire the LMG at BB9 and combine its inherent firepower with the "penetrating fire" at EE9?
