Press Release

STU TINNEY RETURNS TO KANSAS

Manhattan Ks.

Jack Hoskinson, President of the Kansas Striper Association reports that he has succeeded in convincing famed angler Stu Tinney to make a guest appearance at his club’s first annual “REUNION TOURNAMENT.”

Many folks will remember Stu Tinney as the driving force to make inland striped bass fishing the popular sport that it has become. Editor and publisher of Striper Magazine, his family oriented tournaments and technique teaching seminars, brought literally hundreds of folks together from as many as seven surrounding states. Many of the Kansas tournaments had three hundred plus entries.

Aside from designing rods, lures and new techniques that almost every striper fisher person has adopted, Tinney was instrumental in helping to gather much needed information for fisheries biologists, thus forming a base of data that is used by fisheries scientists to this day to properly regulate and maintain this popular fishery.

Stu retired in 1987, and with his wife Lindsay own and operate a horse/donkey breeding farm in Columbia, Tn.

Hoskinson stated that he heard the Raystown Penna. Striper Club was hosting a Stu Tinney Reunion every year for the past five years, at which Tinney was the honored guest. The Raystown club used the revenue from those events to augment their state fisheries budget for raising and stocking striped bass. The five events netted the club over $75,000, a much appreciated donation in these times of economic difficulty for all fisheries organizations throughout the country.

“I just thought I’d give Stu a call,” he said, and I was really surprised and pleased when he agreed to be a part of this celebration.” He added, there are a lot of folks that remember Stu, that have said they are really anxious to re-connect with this affable angling legend.”

The tournament dates are Sept. 19-20-21, location will be Thunderbird Marina on Lake Milford, Kansas. Hoskinson said “I don’t think Tinney can teach us much more,” but he continued by saying “then again, I am almost willing to bet the old dog hasn’t given ALL of his secrets away.”

With that in mind, he convinced Tinney to do one of his old time seminars, in hopes that his old friends from Kansas can squeeze just a little more info from this living encyclopedia.

For more information on the event, contact Jack Hoskinson at (785)658-3811, John Kelley at (620) 960-9104. For camping and boat slip info call Thunderbird Marina (785)238-5864.

Hoskinson said “I realize some folks new to striper fishing won’t know who Stu is” but with a knowing grin he continued all they have to do is read what author Larry Columbo said about Stu in his book “Living Legends of American Sport Fishing.” Larry called Stu a true fishing icon, who has taught anglers across the country in the past few years more about striped bass, than was known in the previous hundred.

Hoskinson also reminded that the seminar was free and open to the public. “Stu enjoys, and is used to working with huge crowds, so we don’t want to disappoint him.” He ended by saying, “if we get it right this first time, like the Raystown club, we hope to make this an annual fund raiser for the Kansas Striper Assn.
