This was our first attempt and not really planned use of boards and balloons when they were surfacing. We had 2 balloons out and 4 boards out, saw them surface, reeled a board in and a balloon in and gave chase after them so all 4 of us could cast on them. We got lucky, they went down, but came up right behind the boat and went right by one of the boards. We had no weights at that time and the shad had aprox. 20 ft. of free line. After we landed the big fellow, before we were ready to go after them again, we had drifted back on our other board and that 9 pounder hit the board 2 ft. from the boat and took it down like a bobber. When I see good schools chasing shad on top, I now will think twice about dragging some free-lining shad around.
