I nearly ended up as Michael. Or Fred.

I didn't actually get named until a week or so after I came home from the hospital, in which time Dad kept calling me Fred, as a general all-purpose fill-in name. Eventually Mum decided that she'd better come up with a real name for me before Fred stuck, and decided on either Michael Denis or Denis Michael. Dad said Denis was OK, but not Michael, so they kept the Denis. Then for my middle name they englishified my grandfather's name (Wilhelm), because he'd promised his children $1000 if any of them named one of their children after him. Apparently they never saw the cash though...
