Here’s my rant.

Can I put forward the suggestion that once a person reaches the end of the rich majesty that was their life. When they finally shuffle off the mortal coil that has bound them to this dimension of life and experience and they make the ultimate journey. When the sum total of their thoughts and fears and worries and joys and loves has finally departed for whatever higher plane we move onto. When the mysterious “it” that constitutes the human soul is finally released from the body….that once all this has happened, our spiritual selves do not become a small anomalous frigging dot whose only purpose is to appear on photos.

Let me take this opportunity to say that Orbs are not ghosts!!!. A ghost is the observable (by image or action) presence of a now dead person. An orb is a small frigging circle on the corner of a photograph and is not spiritual in any way whatsoever.

So what is an orb? It’s a speck of dust. A mote of dirt. A tiny piece of floating flotsam. The kind of detritus that surrounds us every second of every day. We breathe in millions of the little fuckers every microsecond. Oh dear god, I’ve breathed in a half dozen times or more since I started this paragraph, I must be possessed by billions of them! Get an exorcist now! Bell, book and candle Stat!

Please understand, I love ghost photos (and ufo pictures, and bigfoot photos and all the rest of that malarky). I was raised on a diet of Usborne’s book of ghosts, Leonard Nimoy’s “Great Mysteries of the World” and (later in life) the “X-Files” and “The Extraordinary”. What I hate is “Ghost-hunters”, “Spiritualists” and other assorted “vibe-sensitive” wankers claiming that their greatest ever paranormal experience revolved around a flash photo of some dusty church somewhere that they certainly felt was a bit “iffy” and then when the high quality glossies came back from Foxy’s there was gasp an orb!!!

Here’s a brief lesson of the relevant parts in photo-optics.
(1) A camera has a limited focal length (the distance from the lens where stuff will remain in focus). The brighter the surrounding environment the deeper the focal length (ie the further apart stuff can be and remain in focus) and the darker the environment the shorter the focal length. What this means is that if the camera is focused on somebody 5 metres away and the surroundings are fairly dark then (and here’s the rub) even with a flash the stuff that’s further away and the stuff that’s much closer will be out of focus.
(2) As anyone who’s stared at a beam of light coming from a window into a dark room knows motes of dust can be quite bright when they pick up light. Sometimes they are very reflective.
(3) As an object falls further and further out of focus the edges blur and become rounder and rounder.

So, when you grab a flash camera to (1) and a (2) floats in front of the lens exactly at the moment the flash goes off it will look like an anomalous floating (3).

It’s not a ghost, it’s not a poltergeist, it’s not a disembodied wandering spirit. It’s dust. So in closing this is a ghost photo, while this is dust, rain or possibly snow (although maybe it’s the ghost of dust, rain or snow). After all, if the second photo was ghosts then what we have here is some poor girl’s last few seconds on earth before a complete gang-possession.

Sorry for that but I just had to commit it in writing somewhere. Orbs are not ghosts. Thankyou.
