To become a part of offshore circuit racing, you need to be a member of OCRDA and apply for a powerboat licence which is issued by the RYA, and renewed annually. Your boat will need to be compliant with the class structure. Basically,(I'm not being a smart arse!) you need a 1.8litre 2stroke engine or 2.2litre 4 stroke engine and a ski-type boat 18foot long or over, for example, Argo, Phantom, Bernico, are the popular choice at the moment, but many others are suitable.

You will need various safety equipment, such as Orange crash helmets, suitable life jackets. A full list is in the Powerboat racing handbook, PB1, which is available from the RYA.

Once you have sorted that out, you will need to be prepared to be away from home for a few weekends in the summer. Many teams (especially the good ones) arrive at the race venue on a Friday evening for pre-race socialising, partaking in one or two shandies. Saturday will start with a leisurely cuppa (couple of pain-killers for the after effects of the night before) then get the boat checked out by your friendly scruitineer, (watch out for that Welsh one!!) Racing normally starts sometime after 12, depending on tides, whiz around for an hour trying to get in front of everyone else without getting in too much of a mess, then get the boat back in, get ready for prize-giving in the evening, have a few more shandies to celebrate or drown your sorrows, generally have a good night out. Get up on Sunday, search for pain-killers and do it all again, then go home!

If you want to email me direct to ask anything, feel free, no one else takes any notice of what I say! Especially my driver.
