After watching Zach Everingham against Monroe Jefferson last night, here's one man's opinion:
1) very nice ballhandler, a true PG who can already dribble as well as any current Titans.
2) hard to gauge his quickness against suburban kids - he was the quickest kid on the court by far. Very fluid and certainly moves well. At least has above-average quickness that may put him in the Ben Green class and quicker than Rulon Harris. I don't think he's quick as Tyman or of course Willie.
3) excellent shooter, soft feathery touch. Automatic from the line, very smooth (6 for 6 on FTs and only kissed the rim once). His dad told me he won the state free throw championship as a 13 year old and I believe it.
4) dad says he's only playing at 75% because of his elbow/wrist injury. He's a righty and the injury is to his shooting hand. His range of motion is limited. He shoots too much from the shoulder, maybe because of the injury, maybe not. If he shoots from there he won't be able to get his shot off in traffic at the next level.
5) He plays PG on offense but inside on D. Jefferson had a 6-9 230-pounder who wasn't bad and he had to guard him all night. I don't know if he can chase PGs around because he doesn't do that at Grosse Ile. He tends to save his energy and plays in spurts. He knows he has to be on the court all the time for his team to win. He doesn't yet play the typical "stay in the face of your man as soon as he crosses half court" Titan-style defense.
6) He plays with confidence and plays a little cocky. Dribbles through his legs for no reason, makes difficult passes his less-talented teammates can't always handle.
7) He was content to take 3-pointers in the first half but took over in the 3rd quarter and took the ball to the hole. He can move through traffic with crossovers, weaving, athleticism, etc. and can finish, but he finishes below the rim, not above the rim like Willie does.
8) His build is most like Ben Green's body.
9) His dad is a great guy who talked to me three separate times, and he initiated the conversation twice after I introduced myself. Zach's grandpa and uncle both went to U-D. His uncle played baseball for Bob Miller.
10) All in all, he has a chance to be good, I think. He is All-State in golf and tennis but will concentrate on b-ball from now on. He is going to rehab this spring rather than play tennis or baseball. I guess he's good at every sport he tries.
11) Oh yeah, he's a 3.6 student, so no problem in the classrom.
12) Zach and his dad go to all the U-D games and Zach is a regular in the Titan lockerroom. Zach wanted to stay home and his dad is so glad he will be able to see every home game.
