Speaking of advertising, Oakland U. has been running regular ads of significant size in the Oakland Press before home game dates. In the recent past, they budgeted for a heavy blitz of ads on WJR. The impact was nil. Even with their relative success (17 wins to date, I believe) and a "star" to market in Helms, OU has been drawing a typical 1,000 for each game.

One of UDM's biggest recent attempts at marketing to persons outside of the core student/alumni fan constituencies involved a mass mailing with discount coupon to every resident in Ferndale during the Rashad Philips era. I don't have the exact figures in front of me, but several thousand dollars in mailing expenses were incurred, and I believe less than 10 of the coupons were redeemed.
