You big PW fans don't want to hear this..but, my best marketing gimmick to attract sportsloving friends, colleagues and aquaintances to the hall, actually to Cobo, was "ask the coach". Friends thought it was cool to have a real opportunity to discuss the game with Birdsong, and to ask questions. Since that time most of my invitations fall on deaf ears.
I remember trying to discuss this issue with a prominent Titan club officer as the "ask the coach" program was fading.
I was told to "get a life".
Go figure.
Titan Bob may be right about the immediate results from any single attempt at advertising and promotions, but its really an attitude that helps define an organization. We need to build a base of 7500 loyal fans, and its done, like it or not, one fan at a time, maybe even one promotion at a time.
This means little things, like Free Pizza and proper promotion. Keeping the concessions open during the second half. Not running out of hotdogs BEFORE THE GAME EVEN STARTS! I don't know what happened to the Buddy's free Pizza promotion (or was it half price) for holding the opposition under 60 points. But, if it still exists, and I can't imagine why it wouldn't,
noone announced it at the Cleveland State game. People around my seat were wondering. I think Buddy's would like nothing better than to have ten or twenty people show up after the game for their Pizza promotion. Everybody's happy. Ignore them and they take their promotion somewhere else.
People here keep harping about suburbanites not wanting to come down. Yet they draw 6 or 7 thou for big high school games. This makes me wonder whether we are doing enough to draw from the immediate neighborhood? This is still, I beleive, one of the wealthier areas in Detroit, with enough disposable income to provide some fan base. (I admit, I haven't checked the most recent census figures to support this conclusion so don't jump on me for a technicality, the point remains the same.) If they won't come, how do you explain Mario's, jammed every night. Even more amazing, Vince's, in the middle of nowhere. They do it by serving a quality product and by taking care of their customers.
I'm sure that all of these ideas have been suggested and reviewed by the powers that be so I don't think these ideas are god's gift to the athletic department. But I see only sporadic execution of any kind of marketing plan; and this is a disapointment. As the saying goes, a good salesman can sell air conditioner's to Eskimo's.
This is not a huge criticism, altho some will see it as such. The fact remains that we need new attitudes around the old ball yard. I hope Titan Eric doesn't burn out. I hope he gets the support he needs from the Titan Club old guard to make these promotions a success.
By the way, thanks to all those musicians who have worked so hard over the past few years to build up a real Pep Band. Keep up the good work. They should be recognized for their effort!
