His nimble mount spins away from the attacks, keeping his rider safely away from harm but taking a sharp blow to the hindquarters. He bucks once, trying to shake them off his tail. John's eyes rove over the gathering with great worry; the arrival of a third stallion and another mare was a large threat. He glances at Raze sharply as the young-looking steed goes for the tame cutting horse; this one knew humans and exactly what they were trying to do. He must be the ones the other men talk about at the ranch. He shouts at the humans to go, and the entire group breaks formation and forms a semicircle around Daylite, either pushing or pulling her depending on their location. John shouts again, knowing that the herd would not give up so easily, and the men behind daylite flick a rope at her hindquarters, hoping to startle her into running. Somehow in the midst of this chaos, he turns to look at where he had felt something contact with his horse. A large welt had already sprung up, and gratitude floods him for his brave little horse that would press on despite his injury.
