Subject: Safe to insert Rom3 ?????

I've got a Rom3 card that hasn't been in the stream for about a year, it's been in an older style Avr. I'm told it's been auto rolling a long time, but just very basic channels. No ppv and such. it went down resently and has no port to program.Would like to use with new AR-Avr as I don't have a programmer. The question is...Is it safe to put card into receiver to update public key ? Or would this lock or damage an older card? I know this would be bad to do with Dishnet not sure about Bev. Thanks for any info!!!
