Subject: Canterbury Women's Grade - 2001

Please offer any feedback regarding the scope for Women's grades in our Canterbury League next year (2001).

The 2000 season saw us with one team short throughout the season for the Womens B-grade, and many defaulted games due to a shortage of players in Women's A grade teams.

One suggestion might be to coordinate for the top 8 women to combine in a team that competes within the Open grades. They'll probably fit in somewhere near the top of the B grade and may eventually contest for a place in the A-grade.

The remaining Women could then combine into one grade ensuring sufficient players for 4 teams.

Meanwhile, the national squad, development and competition programme will require the A-grade women to train and develop within Women's squads which will aim to develop Women players at all levels.

This would allow/promote:
> the top women to gain sufficient competition from their opposition to develop their individual skills.
> A-grade women to play and develop as a women's team that will be competitive in Women's competition at a higher level.
> (new)female participants to continue to enter the league at a less competitive level.
> opportunity for all female to develop skills within women's training squads.
> in addition, competitive women can still create opportunities to train and develop with competitive open grade players.

It is probably unfair (unless we get more pool access) for the A-grade women to compete in both Women's and Open categories. This would be at the expense of male participation and we've had to turn a number of men's teams and individual players away in the past as we have had increasing demand but limited or even decreasing capacity.
