Yeah, that boss is EXTREMELY difficult, especially when the rings don't bounce off the coil so you can reclaim it easily. It's a toughie!
The best I can do is try to avoid the orbs when they shoot out by going to the other side and trying to jump over them. Still difficult.

Huzzah! Yes, I've seen MegaTokyo. Not my favorite of all-time webcomics, but it does the job. :)
I personally like this comic better: www.rpgworld.com It's the comic that thinks it's a game! Awwww... it's also one of the comics that inspired me, as I thought of doing something similar in SAII.V. Check it out... and stuff.

Don't get too discouraged, I've played games since I was young, so after a while, you know the tricks and stuff of any game.
I've beaten the game normally with all the characters now (as I said before, I've been playing games for a long while, so...), but now my task is to collect the Chaos Emeralds in the special stages and finish the game completely. (Please do not give the secret ending to "Sonic Advance!") However, in all probability, I probably won't do it by tomorrow, when I have to return the game. I really really REALLY despise the special stages! Argh! Forget it! So it's either playing through trial mode or playing in the Tiny Chao Garden. :P
By the way, here's a little code for the game if you want a little fun.
When you select a character, highlight Sonic and press up, then go to Tails and press down, then go to Knuckles and press L, then Amy and press R, then go to Sonic and select him. You should hear a ring. Now, when you play a stage, Sonic will have Tails following him, just like in the old days! Huzzah! :)

RANT OF THE DAY
I am frankly getting sick and tired of the so-called 'reviews' of SA2 Battle. It's like for the DC game, the reviewers were all diehard Sonic fans, and in the GCN game, they were all nitpicky non-Sonic fans. As usual, the same ol' nitpicks arise:
(1) Camera angles.
(2) Voice acting. (Gee, I didn't know that games were so heavy upon such a non-issue.)
(3) Knuckles/Rouge stages. (Or any non-Sonic stage, for that manner. Apparently, people don't like playing Sonic's friends.)
Ah, I'm increasingly bitter. Some people just don't know a good game when they play it.
Still bitter. :P
