Barack Obama’s Stance on the Issues

ABORTION
• Supports Roe v. Wade; has criticized Supreme Court decision that upheld ban on partial-birth abortions; sponsored bill providing contraceptives for low-income women.

BUDGET & ECONOMY
• Supports federal programs to protect rural economy; has supported the Credit Card Bill of Rights; has called for more accountability in subprime mortgages; demands government be accountable for every single dollar for new proposed programs; supports expanding opportunities for minorities in home ownership & global marketplace; create new F.H.A. program to make it easier to convert subprime loans to fixed-rate, 30-year loans; create a fund to help people avoid foreclosures; require better disclosure from lenders.

CIVIL RIGHTS
• Supports strengthening the Americans with Disabilities Act; supports re-introducing the Equal Rights Amendment; believes ending racial profiling is a part of fight for justice; believes in better enforcing women’s pay equity by passing Equal Pay Act; believes in no black or white America, just a United States of America.

CORPORATIONS/BUSINESS
• Believes in rewarding companies that create domestic jobs under the REAL USA Plan; end tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas; voted no on reforming bankruptcy to include means-testing & restrictions; believes in holding corporations responsible for pensions and work conditions

EDUCATION
• Favors increasing Bell Grant; sponsored legislations that recruit and reward good teachers; voted YES on shifting $11B from corporate tax loopholes to education; believes in free public college for any student with at least a B-minus average; backs a nationwide program to reconstruct crumbling school buildings; wants to address the growing achievement gap between students.

ENERGY POLICY
• Wants to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050; wants 20% renewable energy by 2020; believes cap-and-trade is more specific on reducing greenhouse emissions; believes we cannot drill our way out of our addiction to oil; wants to designate sensitive ANWR area as protected wilderness.

FOREIGN POLICY
• Opposed Iraq war resolution from the beginning; opposed troop increase; withdraw one or two brigades a month to finish within 16 months from Iraq; tighten economic sanctions with international cooperation on Iran; US policy should promote democracy and human rights; never negotiate out of fear, and never fear to negotiate; president must abide by international human rights treaties; consider China a competitor but not an enemy; strengthen NATO to confront 21st-century threats.

GUN CONTROL
• Voted no on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers; favors banning semi-automatics; believes concealed carry is okay for retired police officers; respects the second Amendment but favors local gun bans.

HEALTH CARE
• Believes access to basic care should be ensured; believes the problem with health care is about affordability; favors prescription drug re-implementation; believes allowing senior citizens to bulk purchase will save taxpayers money; believes in more funding for Rx benefits, community health, CHIPs and AIDS prevention; require that all children have health insurance; pay for it by rolling back President Bush's tax cuts for households earning over $250,000.

HOMELAND SECURITY
• Opposes torture and renditions; believes it unacceptable for veterans to have to drive 250 miles to a hospital; pursue an anti-nuclear weapons goal; believes Iraq distracted us from al-Qaeda; opposes holding US citizens as unlawful enemy combatants; restore habeas corpus rights to reach Muslims abroad; strongly favors increased inspecting of all incoming cargo; expand Peace Corps and AmeriCorps to 266,000 slots; wants to address the deficiencies in the VA system.

IMMIGRATION
• Favors having border patrolled and surveyed; believes increasing the legal fees on immigrants is not helping; believes deporting 12 million immigrants is impractical; believes immigration raids are ineffective; believes immigrants are scapegoats for high unemployment rates; supports the DREAM Act for the children of illegal immigrants; believes in extending welfare and Medicaid to immigrants; supports a path to legalization for illegal immigrants that includes learning English and paying fines; toughen penalties for hiring illegal immigrants; voted for fence along Mexican border.

JOBS
• Voted yes on increasing the national minimum wage; voted YES on restricting employer interference in union organizing; believes tax cuts solely for the rich do not create jobs; believes working full-time should mean enough to support a family; favors giving public safety officers collective bargaining right; favors focusing farm programs on family farms, not giant corporations.

SOCIAL SECURITY
• Favors a $2000 tax credit for Working Families Savings Accounts; favors raising the cap on the payroll tax on wealthy individuals; opposes any efforts to privatize Social Security;

TAX REFORM
• Voted NO on permanently repealing the `death tax`; opposes raising estate tax exemption to $5 million; favors tax incentives to create jobs at home instead of offshore; favors specific tax relief for families making $75,000 or less now.

TECHNOLOGY
• Favors creating online database of science & math scholarships; ensure net-neutrality, not corporate-tiered Internet; favors investing on transportation and clean coal technology projects; favors increased funding for math and science research & education; favors incentives for next-generation broadband in every community.

WELFARE & POVERTY
• Favors local/state programs to deal with inner-city problems; co-sponsored the Stop Fraud Act for full disclosure in subprime lending; wants to create 20 "Promise Neighborhoods" in high-poverty cities; wants to cut poverty in half in 10 years, with faith-based help.
