Helen walked into her living room and surveyed the scene. Suzie was lying on the sofa reading Shadow Horse for about the 6th time with her dalmation, Lady Bug, lying over top of her legs. Jess was reading the 3rd Harry Potter book for the 8th time on the love seat with their little welsh corgi, Chip, on her lap. Patches, her little mutt, was drooped over the arm of the love seat half asleep. The rest of the dogs, Bingo, Sonya, Arwyn, Ittl’ bits & Aleu. Were in a pile in the middle of the room fast asleep. Jacob was sitting next to them scratching Sonya’s ears. Helen walked into the room looking guilty and a bit shifty. “What now?” said Jess looking over the top of her book. “Well” Helen said and walked back into the hallway. She walked back into the room leading 3 more dogs. Jess and Suzie sighed and looked over the top of their books and immediately they both said “OOOOOOHH!! Their so cute”. 1 was a little Westland terrier, 1 was a black and brown basset hound & 1 was an adorable black pug. “This is Kris” Helen said, pointing at the terrier. “His is Sniff” she said patting the basset hound. “And this is Punk” she said, scratching the pug. “They are so cute” Suzie & Jess said again. Jacob looked incredulously at his mom “You have a really horrible soft spot for animals. We’ve got 4 cats, 10 birds & now we have 12 dogs”. “I know!” Helen said, smiling guiltily “but we have fun with them don’t we?”. “Yep” Jacob said, smiling now. Eric came into the room and surveyed the scene. “Helen I’m not going to be able to let you near the humane society for the rest of your life” He said, trying to look stern, but a grin broke out over his face and he looked down at the dogs. The whole family patted the new dogs. The rest of the dogs came over and sniffed around at the new arrivals. They took ALL the dogs outside and played fetch, tag and other games with the dogs.
After about ½ an hour they went back inside. It was far to hot to stay outside for but so long. They all got drinks and relaxed for a while. Jess and Suzie went into the old guest room. It had been completely transformed. The bed and dressers were gone and the whole thing was devoted to birds. Perches and cages were all over the place. All 10 birds were enjoying themselves. They played with the birds for awhile. Suzie went out to the kitchen and then came back 3 minutes later. “Mom says we can let all the birds out!” she said. Jess opened the door and all the birds flew out. Disco, the Macaw, Settled on Jacob’s shoulder squawking proudly. Jacob stroked his cheek and smiled at the strutting bird. Both cockatoos flew straight to Helen who was cooking dinner. Citrus sat on her left shoulder and Sunny on the left. Helen laughed and let them sit on her. Hamlet and Ophelia flew excitedly around Jess’s head chirping in an ecstatically. While Jack and Jill settled gently onto Suzie’s head sitting quietly. The canaries flew around the kitchen and living room in a frenzy. They all played with the birds while they waited for dinner.
