Alli smiled and picked up her gymnastics bag. She walked outside, the dogs barking at her heels, and climbed into Laura’s jeep. Her 17 y/o sister climbed in after her and drove them to the gym. Alli and Laura grinned and walked to their gymnastics room. The huge room had tons of floor space. Alli went into the dressing room and changed into her sparkly sky blue leotard. Laura tucked her long hair into a neat bun and slipped on her glittery purple leotard. They stepped out and began their warm up. Alli did a thorough warm up and then began some splits. She practiced her Russian straddle and then walked up to one of her instructors, Bridget. The petite lady had bright curly red hair tucked into a ponytail and spoke with an Irish brogue. “Am I doing my straddle right?” Alli asked, giving an example. Bridget nodded cheerfully. After the whole class was warmed up, Bridget called them over and said, “Alright, today I want to see some perfect routines! Everyone go practice and one of us will come watch.” Bridget pointed to a tall 19 y/o with blond hair named Alex, the spotter, and a 5’ woman with black hair tucked in a bun named Meredith, the other instructor. Laura walked over to the uneven bars and began to practice, executing perfect form through her flips and spins. Alex walked over and spotted her carefully, making sure she didn’t fall. She practiced her routine and then did a perfect dismount. Alli was doing her floor routine with Meredith watching. She used every inch of the 40 x 40 floor as she cartwheeled, flipped, and somersaulted through her routine. “Good.” Her instructor said, surveying her with great approval. Meanwhile, Laura flipped off the lower bar to make it onto the higher and slipped, flying to far over the bar. She landed with a thud, not far from where Alex was. Her face crumpled in pain and she bit her lip, trying not to cry. Everyone ran over and asked her what had happened. “I slipped. I’ll be okay, but my ankle hurts bad.” Alex ran and called her number. He left a message on the machine and called Helen’s number, her emergency contact number. “Hello.” Jacob answered the phone. “This is Alex from Laura’s gymnastic class. She took a fall and it looks pretty bad. Can anyone come and meet us at the hospital where she will get X rays?” Alex replied nervously. “Our families are on a trail ride, but I can come. I’ll be at the FC Hospital asap!” Jacob said, hanging up. Alex ran over and talked to Laura until the ambulance came. Alli and Laura sat in back and EMTs examined the leg. They thought it was broken and put one of those temporary casts on it. At the hospital, Alli sat in nervously in the cold waiting room while Laura got her X rays. Jacob walked in and sat down next to her. “How is she?” he asked in a worried tone. “They think it’s broken or badly sprained. She is in a lot of pain but she won’t show it.” Alli replied slowly. Laura came out a half an hour later, wearing a cast on her left leg. She smiled at Jacob and gave him a half hug. “Thanks for coming.” She said, gratefully. She listened as the doctor told her what to do for it. Then, she leaned on her crutches and walked to Jacob’s car. Alli hopped in the back and smiled, grateful her sister was okay. They drove home in silence and met Susan as she was racing out the door of the house. “Laura, sweetheart, are you alright?” she asked in a panicked voice. They explained the situation and after a while Laura was helped inside. She sat on her queen sized bed, cast stretched out in front of her, and whistled. Dot, Rogue, and the cats raced into her room. Lucy, the family tabby, curled up in her lap. As she lay there with the animals, she looked out to window and sighed. She wouldn’t be on a horse again for 3 months and she already missed riding.
