Saddle knocks lightly on Hannah's door. "Come in" Hannah calls, turning down the radio. Saddle walks in and sits on Hannah's bed. "We need to talk about Heaven" Saddle tells her. "I don't want to choose" Hannah replies. "Hannah, eventually you will have to decide about this, and i think you should do it soon" Saddle tells her. "Heaven will never be sound again, and he will never be able to jump or do what he loves. i think it would be kinder to have him put to sleep now so he doesn't suffer" Saddle tells her. "If thats whats best for him, have the vet do it, but i don't want to be there." Hannah replies quickly. "Ok, the i'll have the vet come out and do it tomorrow while you're at school. I'm proud of you, Hannah, you made the right decision. Heaven would have hated being cooped up in his stall for months" Saddle tells her. "I'm going to sleep with Heaven tonight" Hannah tells Saddle. "Ok, but come down for dinner first" Saddle tells Hannah. Hannah nods and follows Saddle to the kitchen. they all eat and Saddle tells Mikki, Jessie, Maggie and Michelle the bad news. Hannah goes back upstairs and brushes her teeth and grabs her pillow and blankets, then heads down to the barn. she sets up camp in Heaven's stall and he lays down. she rests her head on his back and cries herself to sleep.
** THE NEXT MORNING **
Hannah wakes up early the next morning and gives Heaven another shot of bute. then she moves her pillow and blankets out of his stall and feeds him breakfast, then takes him to graze for a little while before Saddle calls her to get ready for school. Hannah puts him in his stall and jogs up to the house. she takes a shower and eats breakfast. "Mom, can we bury Heaven on the farm?" Hannah asks. "Of course, we can bury him wherever you want" Saddle tells her. "Ok, i want to bury him on the cross country course next to the water jump, that was his favorite jump" Hannah replies sadly. "of course, we'll bury him right next to the water jump and i'll have a marker made for his grave" Saddle promises. "Thanks mom" Hannah replies, then she grabs her stuff and sprints out teh door to catch the bus. While she is at school the vet comes out. Saddle sits in the stall with Heaven's head in her lap. the vet gently prepares Heaven and quickly gives him the shot. after a minute the gray gelding stops beathing. Saddle looks up, her eyes filled with tears. Saddle makes arrangements for him to be burried before Hannah comes home and marks his grave with a pile of flowers from her garden. Hannah comes home from school later that day. "Did the vet come?" she asks quietly. Saddle nods sadly. Hannah's eyes fill with fresh tears and she slowly walks up the stairs to her room. a little while later, Jessie, Maggie and Michelle walk in. "Wheres Hannah?" they ask. "In her room, let her be" Saddle tells them softly. they nod and go to their rooms. Finally Mikki comes home from track. "The vet came, didn't she?" he asks sadly. "Yeah, let Hannah be, she's really upset" Saddle tells him. "Wow, i can't believe Heaven is gone, just last week him and Hannah were getting ready to go to that big event, and i took the video of them practicing all three phases" Mikki says sadly to himself. Saddle nods sadly. "he was an amazing horse, and pure heart" Saddle tells Mikki softly, remembering her years of eventing on him.
