Harold Fraser Park was the setting for the final of the
Brewer Shield where a confident St George team took on
Balmain after wiping the floor with them the previous week.
This week would be a totally different matter as Balmain came out fired up and ready to play.
St George won the toss and elected to bowl on a damp wicket.
This initially proved a good tactic as Rene Farrell and Sara
Aley had very little runs taken from their bowling and Sara
picked up two early wickets. Patrice Callaghan and Samantha
Han then bowled good spells each taking wickets and keeping
the run rate down, UNTIL… Kirsty Riley for Balmain came to
the wicket and went on a run-scoring spree that threatened
to ruin our chances of victory. On 26 , and looking very
dangerous she hit a Sohryn Carter delivery like a tracer
bullet to Emily Nash at Mid on who took a great catch that
turned the match back our way. Balmain then cruised to 7 /64
from their allotted 30 overs. A score that was still going
to be hard to chase on this wicket.

Aimee Harris and Samantha Han opened the batting and moved
along slowly and carefully until Samantha was brilliantly
caught at short mid on by Sara O’Rourke. Aimee Harris
departed a short time later for a well made 6 which brought
Rene Farrell to the crease. Rene and Katherine Koschel
batted steadily until Katherine was dismissed for 6. Sara
Aley then joined Rene and it seemed it was up to the captain
and vice captain to bat us out of trouble. Sara had made 5
and looked great until she was caught at point by Alison
Parkin. The ball seemed past her but she somehow got a
finger to it and knocked it up to take a catch that really
sparked the Balmain girls.
Patrice Callaghan joined Rene and after a few swings and
misses started to see the ball well and these two girls got
us to 60 when Kirsty Riley bowled a slower delivery and
caught Rene on the pads in front. We were now 6 for 60. We
needed 5 to win with 4 overs to go. The crowd was cheering
every delivery and the scorers were nervously adding the
book to ensure no mistakes were made.
Patrice attempted to hit her way out of trouble and fell for
12. We were now 7 for 60. Sohryn Carter confidently strolled
to the wicket but she was out for 0 to another great
delivery from Kirsty Riley.
With Clare Crewdson and Lisa Maurice at the crease and still
5 runs to go, Balmain bowled a couple of wides leaving us 3
to win.
Clare hit a ball to mid wicket and the girls took off on a
suicide single. They made it! One to tie, two to win.
Lisa hits the ball to point and Alison Parkin takes another
catch. Amy Pratt comes to the crease and survives the last
few deliveries of the 2nd last over.
Amy Wark is given the task of bowling the last over for
Balmain. Clare punches the ball past square leg and the
girls run like the wind. Scores are tied.
Amy Pratt is then bowled and scores are still tied.
Amy Crewdson joins her twin sister at the creasefor the last
few balls. Amy swings and misses twice and is finally bowled
on the last ball. Scores are tied and thankfully St George
win the game as they were minor premiers. Whew!!!!!

Final details were:
Balmain 7/64 tied with St George 10/64
Bowling figures:
Rene Farrell 0-8, Sara Aley 2-11, Aimee Harris 1-1, Clare
Crewdson 0-14, Patrice Callaghan 2-12, Sohryn Carter 1-4.
Catches were taken by Sara Aley, Amy (Crocodile) Pratt,
Emily Nash and Katherine Koschel.

Batting results were:
Samantha Han 1, Aimee Harris 6, Katherine Koschel 6, Rene
Farrell 22, Sara Aley 5,
Clare Crewdson 2

Thanks to all players, parents and officials who participated in the 2000/2001 Brewer Shield. I, as a parent was very impressed with the standard of the competition and the demeanour of everyone involved. We made some great new friends and hope to see you all again next year.

Also, Kirsty Riley from Balmain- Best wishes for your upcoming tour to the UK. Hit it hard (the ball that is).
