We're glad to hear from you and that you are okay. I agree with Heather on the post abortion counseling if you feel like you need it. Many women who are post abortive feel okay afterwards, but often later have feelings of regret and sadness. We are always here for you Jacqueline. I had my abortion a little over 3 weeks...as i said before i had complications ..they did an internal ultrasound and she said there was "stuff" left inside me. So i had to take mysopristol and they said i would be in a lot of pain and that it would come out...i did bleed a lot while i was taking this medication but nothing really came out of me it was just a few little clots and blood and i wasnt in pain at all. After i had the abortion they told me to take a pregnancy test 3 weeks after the fact...which i have done this morning and it was positive..i was concerned because im tryiny to get my body back and i cant seem to do it my stomache seems like its getting bigger. Im not an idiot i know its impossible to have a living being inside me and i know that you can still have the pregnancy hormones in your body for a long time. Im just concerned because i had those complications and im wondering if maybe there is still stuff in me. I got the feeling they were not telling me everything at the ultrasound and they refused to let me see the pictures...so i dont know im confused and concerned...what do you guys think??

Hi Jacequeline,

Do you have a regular doctor you can go see about it? I've heard of having a surgical abortion after a failed chemical one, but never of administering a chemical abortion after a failed surgical one. That doesn't sound right to me. If parts of the fetus were still left in you after your first abortion that is a somewhat common complication and one that needs to be treated promptly and seriously because the ensuing infection can be quite dangerous to you. The usual recourse is to go back in for a second surgical abortion to remove the pieces that were left behind.

Are you still running a fever? If so I'd skip even the regular doctor visit and go straight to the ER, even if it's a moderate fever.

You do have rights that need to be protected, and it's perfectly reasonable for you to call the abortion clinic and ask that they tell you, specifically, what the result on the ultrasound screen showed. By law they have to tell you, and would have had to show you had you asked at the time.

Hi Jacqueline,

If things do not seem right to you, then they probably aren't. At the very least you should be seen to find out what is going on. Personally, if clinic isn't being really helpful, I would go elsewhere. As Heather said, if you are running a fever you need to be seen NOW. A fever is an immune system response and is frequently a sign of infection which can be quite serious.

I had a missed abortion (basically a retained miscarriage) and bloating was one of the symptoms.

Misoprostol is a prostaglandin. It is given to make your uterus contract. They probably gave it to you hoping that you wouldn't have to go back for a second procedure, but it is not always a successful method. Did they give you any instructions regarding it's use? Did they schedule any sort of follow up?

Anyway, you definitely should be seen again and soon.

And please let me know what you find out. I'd like to know that you are getting the medical care you need.

I actually had the ultrasound and was given the medication in the ER. I tried to call my gyno today but hes not in on fridays. Ill wait till monday so i could talk to his nurse. You know part of me was happy to see a positive pregnancy test again...wow i cant believe it i would have been almost 11 weeks now...I know this is a stupid question but after having a surgical abortion and taking that medication and all the antibitics and the percocet they gave me for pain (which i didnt have) and the bleeding...is there a chance that it all failed or it was more then one and there is still something unharmed inside me...i know its impossible...but i just have this wierd feeling im still pregnant. We waited for 2 weeks after the abortion to have sex again...so we had sex for the first time about a week ago...last thursday (unprotected...but he didnt ejaculate in me) I KNOW THAT IS STUPID...I KNOW I KNOW!!! it just happened ...i was depressed and he was there and we had not had sex or been close to each other in over a month and i just needed it the closeness...but im sure if i got pregnant from having sex a week ago it wouldnt show up in a pregnancy test yet right? I feel so stupid..i read other teenage girls posts and they stupid things like im saying at 24...unprotected sex after an abortion...how stupid am i! Ill never have another abortion again....anyways back to the present...do you think maybe my test is still positive because i still just have hormones inside me?? im sure that is the case..PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it sounds like your surest answer will come from your next visit with your doctor/nurse, hopefully on Monday. Speculation is only that until then. It's most likely the residual hormones. It takes the body awhile to believe it's not pregnant anymore.

But a retained pregnancy after an abortion is not unheard of, either.

About the unprotected sex thing, don't worry; we won't beat you up over that. It's your life and your choices. It might be helpful for you to be aware, though, that statistically a LOT of women get pregnant again within 6 mos of having an abortion. I believe a lot of this works subconsciously, hence the otherwise normally smart women not using protection again, etc.

Are you still running any fever?

I saw your earlier message, but I couldn't write at that moment. I am sorry things are turning out this way and you are having this problem. This is one reason I try to persuade women not to have abortions. The situation you are in sounds potentially serious.

You must make sure you have nothing left inside. Go to someone other than the abortionist. If he's using misoprostol, I would be very, very leery of him. He's using it off-label, which means that it's not supposed to be used that way. The company that makes it regards this use as dangerous. They don't want the legal liability if it is used this way. This isn't normally the drug they use for contracting the uterus anyway.

Plase go immediately and see another doctor about this. This could be potentially life-threatening, and we don't want to lose you!

It sounds very suspcious to me!! I would not be surprised if you were still pregnant before they gave you misoprostol and that was their way of getting the job done. And while it is unlikely that you are stil pregnant now i have read a couple of stories of women whose babies did survive their attempts at abortion. I would definately have it investigated. When you did the pregnancy test was the line faint or strong? Another idea would be to have a couple of quantitative HCG blood tests done to see if your levels were still rising. If thats the case i would think you were still pregnant or even possibly had an ectopic pregnancy.
Hypothetical question..If it turned out that your baby was still alive and well inside you after everything would you have another abortion or would you keep your baby?

I had my abortion done at the hospital not in a clinic...because its covered by medicare in the hospital. When i got the fever 3 days after the abortion i went back to the same hospital but in the emergency room. Its a really good hospital its the teaching hospital for mcgill university....anyways there is no appt available with my dr till september 11th...so thats not going to work. Im going to wait till monday so i can call his nurse and ask her what i should do. I dont want to go to a walk in clinic because they are just gonna send me to the hospital seeing as they dont have ultrasound stuff in the clnics thats in the hospital. I dont know what to do..my stomach looks pregnant....why??? is that normal after an abortion i cantfit in any of my clothes and its only my stomach nowhere else.

And in regards to the question if i would keep it if i was still pregnant. If i am still pregnant ..i dont know...probably not because of all the medication ive taken and i went to a wedding and i was drinking and smoking (just that night) i only did that cus i thought i wasnt pregnant anymore. If i get pregnant again no i wont have an abortion...but im still pregnant i just cant see that this child would be normal. But thats crazy there is no way im still pregnant. Its not the test that concerns me its my stomache that i look really pregnant. I hold it in most of the time so noone can see but if i let it go i look really pregnant!!

The line was faint at first on the test and you could hardley see it but then it got darker and darker..it says to read after 2 minutes but that plus line was there right away.. i took at 7:45 this morning.

Im under so much stress right now. I have the exibition show coming up.. (the "lets get married" show. Me and my patner have a booth for our business in the show and its in 2 weeks and we hav nothing ready so im stressed...and i dont fit in any clothes i mean am i just gaining weight or what! I had the abortion and ive accepted that so i just want it to be over and now im just unassured i dont know what the hell to do.

In the beginning of my pregnancy i was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sick very bad!!! and as soon as i had the procedure it was gone the next day..my breasts are not sore anymore...im not even that tired anymore so i have no symptoms anymore just this growing stomach...im so confused..i hate being a woman sometimes lol anyways...what can i do!

Hi Jacqueline,

I have been reading your posts for the past couple of weeks but I haven't had a chance to post to you myself. I did some research on the internet about problems from medical abortions etc. What you experienced is rather common but very dangerous as well.

Usually after a abortion a pregnancy test will read positive for usually up to six weeks. Now, if there is still fetal tissue inside of the uterus that can also make a pregnancy test positive as well. The pregnancy hormone, "hCG," is made by the blastocyst and embryo and causes that part of the ovary that makes progesterone, necessary for the rich lining of the womb, to continue until the fetal tissue can make its own. So, if there is still hcg in your blood stream which there is because your having a positive test result then I would go to the doctor if the test still shows a positive after four weeks post abortion.

If you still feel bad, I would definitely go to the er again. Having a infection from a abortion can be very serious and even deadly. Also, a doctor would be able to give you a blood test to determine if you are pregnant which would be more accurate. A lot of times women have to have a second surgical abortion also known as D&C because the first abortion failed.
