Hi Nikki,

CONGRATULATIONS! Girls are so great. I'm so thankful for the technology of ultrasounds that lets us see these little ones so early. We have four children, and each ultrasound has been it's own separate wonder. In one of them that I had at 22 weeks (a daughter) I actually got to SEE her doing the kicking I'd been feeling for quite some time now. She seemed to 'lay back' in a lounging position and just kick her little feet up at my stomach. I could feel her as she was doing it and to see and feel it at the same time was quite a strange experience.

Oh I'm so thrilled for you, Nikki. Congrats again to you and Paul. Pictures would definitely be very cool. :)
If you guys need some outside mediation in choosing those names for her you can always ask Shellie to post a name poll here and we help you decide. You can send her whichever names you're considering and we all vote on which one's we like best.

Nikki you're so blessed to be having a little girl! Girls are really wonderful! I have so much fun dressing my little girl in pretty little things and letting her help me cook ect. And as her mother you will be the single biggest influence in her life being of the same gender it is you that she will look to when learning what it is to be a woman. It's a big responsibilty but nothing to be afriad of, more it is something to look forward to. You can be so close to your little girl :) How far along in your pregnancy are you now?

thanks everyone. i'm very excited.

luka, at the time of my ultrasound, i was 30 weeks 5 days. i'm almost 32 weeks now.

just wondering, i was watching the nurse when she was measuring the baby, and it was measuring at about 34 weeks. that's four weeks ahead of what it should be. just wondering if that's normal...

anyway, thanks everyone...

Yeah it can be normal especially the later you are in your pregnancy the bigger the difference with individual babies/fetuses. The measurments the take using ultrasound are compared with an average length of fetuses at that age. A baby slightly bigger or smaller is no cause for alarm in most cases. So your baby is a bit bigger than the average, i say that's good news :) She is nice and healthy :) So how does it feel to be 32 weeks with not long to go? Are you excited or nervous or both?

I am not having my first baby and i am the same it's like i can't believe i am going to have a baby lol so i know what you mean. Are you planning to breastfeed? It makes life soooo much easier if you do! No bottles to clean sterilise measure heat up ect. It may not sound like alot of work making bottle but when you're caring for a baby and having broken sleep it makes a world of difference. Your baby is less likely to get sick and have reflux and things like that. Breast fed babies usually settle quicker and more easily than bottle fed babies. I found i lost weight alot quicker afterwards too even though i had a bigger appetite breastfeeding than i did when i was pregnant i still lost alot of weight. I never felt healthier than when i was breastfeeding for some unknown reason. And last but not least it's such a lovely closeness that you share with your baby when you are her source of nourishment :) I have bottle fed and breast fed and so i speak from experience. Ok ending my pro breastfeeding rant now lol.
Don't worry too much about labour it's not that bad and over before you know it. Epidurals are really helpful too :)
Do you ever watch docos about childbirth? I am allways amazed at how big they seem when they come out lol they must be folded right up in there.

Hi Nikki,

Measured at 34 weeks, wow! My first child, our son, was actually born at 34 weeks but he was fine. He was 5.5lbs and 17.5 inches which the doctor said was a pretty good size for his premature status. He was observed for six days to make sure he could regulate his breathing, breast feed, and pass stools and he had a pretty strong case of jaundice but that passed eventually and he was just fine. He's 8 now and a huge, huge joy to me. I was just reflecting on this yesterday, how blessed I am to have such a fantastic relationship with my son. I just really love the guy, everything he is as a person, and I'm SO lucky to be his mom. He's a very high gratification/low maintenance kid, lol.

My three daughters are an equal joy to me and their blessings go far beyond the nearly intolerable cuteness they inflict on you periodically, lol. I enjoy the deep connection I have to them as 'my girls' and the fun time we doing things together now. A little intimidating at times because they do imitate me a lot (for better or for worse!) and I can only imagine how much this matter more as they get older (they're currently 7,6 and 4.)

Anyway, I'm just so thrilled for you. Your excitement is quite contagious and now you've got me waiting to hear 'the good news' of her arrival. Have you picked out names yet?

I second Luka's 'pro-breastfeeding' rant, lol, very heartily myself. I miss it so much! The health and development benefits are obvious but the bonding experience to curl up with your little one and just rock seems to rock all of life's cares away for awhile.

I also agree with the advice not to stress about labor and delivery too much. It was hard for me not to with my first baby (fear of the unknown!!) but afterwards I felt very empowered and relieved that it wasn't nearly as difficult as I'd thought it would be. Every woman has a different experience, of course, but that was mine. The best advice my nurse midwife gave me was to go against the instinct to tense up during a contraction and just try to relax and let it 'wash over you.' If you do it it's much less uncomfortable and is actually more productive (opens your body up more quickly without the resistence to it.) The other great advice she gave was to plan on doing it naturally (no drugs) until it came to a point where it didn't seem possible. I didn't wind up needing drugs for any of my births and I have a feeling this aided the clear process of a quicker delivery to not have mixed body signals, etc.

Having said that, the third best advice I got was to take everyone else's opinion with a grain of salt, lol, because people can get quite passionate about birthing methods, baby rearing, etc. It should be really clear that whether you have a natural birth or drug assisted one, breast or bottle feed, etc, whatever works for you works for you and the end result in both cases is ultimately the arrival of your baby to love and know and in the big picture that's all that matters.

Yaaayy that you're in the countdown!!

With joy,

Heather

thanks a bunch everyone.

i do plan to breasfeed. that is if i can... but i'm sure i will be able to.

we don't have names picked out yet. paul and i can't agree on anything, so we're kinda not talking much about it. i've got a few names i like though.

as long as i get my epidural, i think i'll be fine with the labor. actually, i think i'm more scared that it's gonna start in the middle of the night while paul's at work. i wish he could stay with me for the next eight weeks, but we need the money.

i'm also worried that it's gonna happen while i'm at work. and we don't want to get me started about work. i'm so glad i only have six more weeks.

anyway...

thanks. and i'll be sure to let everyone know when she's born and all that.

oh, and i'm working really hard to get those ultrasound pictures up. it sucks not having a scanner, but i think i've got another way to do it.

so, everyone take care of yourselves, and i'll talk to you later...
