Subject: Try Mario Sunshine...

Luigi's Mansion was a poor choice on Nintendo's half as the debut game for Game Cube. Mario Sunshine is a vast improvement.

Mario Sunshine is set up like Mario 64, you have most of the same controls along with the added features of the FLUDD water pack (you can shoot, hover, rocket and turbo run). You have one central area you can travel around and gain access to the other worlds. In this it's the Delfino Plaza.

If you don't know the story, here's a quick briefing. Mario, Peach and several of their Toad servants are taking a vacation on Isle Delfino which is like the Club Med of the Mushroom Kingdom but as soon as their plane lands they find trouble. Someone posing as Mario has been dumping paint-like goo all over the island causing the island's main power source, the Shine Sprites to flee the island. Mario mistaken for the real criminal is accused of the vandalism and is now told to clean up the island or he can't return home. It is up to Mario to find the Shine sprites, clean up the mess and stop this mysterious Shadow Mario person.

The colors are bright and rich and I was impressed with the detail of the water. You have to fight with the camera angle at times but compared to other games I've played I like the idea of adjusting the angle to your liking so you can see more or less.

There are less stages in Mario Sunshine than in Mario 64 however there are more episodes per stage (Shine Sprites to collect in each world) plus secret ones you must track down. As with many games, the beginning stages are easy to get you used to the controls but it gets more challenging and a much longer game than "Luigi's Mansion." The real challenge lies in trying to collect all 120 Shine Sprites.

Also another feature you Mario fan might be interested in is the return of the Mario/Yoshi team. Yes not since Super Mario World has Mario ridden Yoshi but now he does and the island Yoshis have various skills, besides eating they can spit juice like stuff on baddies, they get great hang time with jumps and eat baddies that Mario can't defeat. There are disadvantages though. The island Yoshis are not water resistant. If a Yoshi gets in water deeper than his knees, he'll dissolve. Also the Yoshis have to be fueled with fruit found all over the island.

Mario Sunshine was the second Game Cube game I bought (Smash Bros was the first) and I loved it. I'm a loyal Mario junkie who is looking forward to future Mario releases.
